Think I'm nearing the end of Sea of Stars - game just keeps getting better.

Spoiler
Kool-aid man is an awesome character lol
The shift in tone to the other world is great. I love the subtle shift in familiar music and small detail changes to the UI that align with the new setting. I just beat the bird boys - the game has done such a good job in terms of variety of locales and none of them have overstayed their welcome.

I know there's a "true" ending. Did anyone here bother? Not sure it's worth it, I'll probably just watch on Youtube.

I didn't know there were multiple endings :D

Apparently you have to do a ton of post game sidequests to get it.

Ohhhh well shit, that's reason to revisit it down the road  :smoke:

Nearing the end of Calisto Protocol I think. Some frustrating combat segments near the end of the game but overall have had a great time with it.

Yea, the game definitely has issues, but it's a real shame that it didn't do well enough to get a second game to build off it.

I love the setting so much, and there's a solid foundation there.. I'm sad it's not going to get a sequel.

Yeah sucks so much. Game has all the framework to be a superb franchise. Few little tweaks and improvements here and there and it's a top tier game imo. Shame they won't get the chance.

Finished up Sea of Stars this morning. Very good game overall, definitely the best of those indie 16 bit JRPG type games I've played.

Pros:
-World is definitely the highlight for me. The visuals combined with the music made each zone awesome to go through. Tons of variety in the locales.
-The above is complimented by the pacing of the game which is very strong. I finished up in 25 hours and thought the length was perfect. It dragged a bit at the beginning but once it hit its stride no area really outstayed its welcome. Even the last stretch of the game was pretty quick for a JRPG.
-Dungeons were cool and the puzzles were fun. Nothing difficult but a good change of pace and interesting enough concepts.
-I seem to be in the minority but I didn't really mind the combat. I found it engaging enough and while it was easy, it was kinda fun managing the locks and stuff. There was a pretty minimal amount of it for a JRPG and the music was great so that helps.
-Some cool characters. Particularly the party members that join in the later parts of the game had fun backstories.

Cons:
-The combo system is cool but I wish they found a way to balance it in a way that it carried over to the next fight. I get why it didn't, but there were times where I felt I needed to drag a fight on (which is kinda hard here, since you can't just defend like in some JRPGs) to get a combo heal off or something.
-Some not cool characters - the characters you start the game with are pretty lame.
-Overall story is forgettable

Definitely gonna be in my top 10 this year.

Also been going back and fucking around with some GT7. Forza got me in the mood for some races but I wasn't really feeling it.

It's kinda crazy how much more there is to the GT7 single player experience. Way more tracks and for me, the progression system is far more varied and engaging. Having a good time, I'm on menu book 25, not sure how many there are but I'm still on pretty low end cars.

Quote from: Twinblade on October 20, 2023, 07:19:00 PMI don't think its feasible to play through all the games like that. Not only would the gameplay get exhausting but you're looking at several hundred hours of gameplay.

Zero is a prequel and is considered one of the best, so that would be a good one to start with. Then I would just jump to one of the last games, like Like a Dragon.

But you should play the 2 Judgement games as well. I think those even exceed the Yakuza games in some ways.
Quote from: Casual on October 20, 2023, 08:05:42 PMPlay 0. One of the best games of the last decade imo.

It's a natural starting point and frankly it's just better than the rest. If you really like 0, just go through sequentially after that.

ok, thanks guys. 0 to start with it is then. I didn't know these games are so long lol

Gotta play some other trash first, but this could be my christmas game if gamepass won't end up as bomb as last year :ben:  :ben:

Played through and finished Super Mario Bros Wonder. The game is great but I didn't find it that mind blowing, it just felt like another solid 2D Mario. Some of the new features are cool but it also feels like nintendo could have done more with them. Take the online stuff for example, you get hearts for helping players but they're basically just window dressing. It would be cool if you could use them as currency to unlock some additional features or abilities or something.

The badges are also a missed opportunity, there's just not much reason to use the vast majority of them. The cap is the first one you get and I found that it was good enough to get both wonder seeds and the 3 big flower coins in the majority of the game's levels.

Same with the characters. There's a impressive roster but Mario being the most balanced and familiar of the bunch just makes him the best one to use if you're playing solo.

I think the wonder effects were the most impressive and changed up the gameplay in clever and interesting ways.

As a whole the game is another high quality switch platformer but as far as that genre is concerned I actually think I preferred Kirby last year (will probably be an unpopular opinion im sure).

That's a fair review. The graphics and level design (especially with the wonder effects) are the highlight. I don't consider it a GOTY contender, but it's a game that just boosts my mood.
