“We’ll see launching on XSX/S, PS5 Switch 2, and PC a heck of a lot

Handhelds will have a period allowing them to catch up to consoles somewhat.  Being able to play current gen games on a portable with 720 or 1080p resolution is a reality now..

Nintendo played a smart hand and found their niche with the hybrid console.  People have lower expectations given the hardware power, and now they may be able to exceed gamers expectations in some ways, instead of always just having a relatively underpowered "console"..

Now you have devices capable of replacing your traditional console..  Nintendo this generation with the Switch, had managed to get enough AA content from 3rd parties that I believe they've become quite comfortable with putting their games up to Nintendo's own first party, and it's a HUGE opportunity for them now with Switch 2 and their AAA games.  Nintendo could not only have a "secondary console" but it has the potential to be the only console gamers really need.

And Sony doing a half-measure traditional handheld to compete might not work out as well for them.. as making dedicated software for it would take away from their traditional console... and any attempt to do that would honestly probably cause a rift between their fanbase.  At this point I really think it's go all in on hybrid, or don't... and I guess what happens if you don't is something like the Portal.. Devs focus on PS5, and the games just work... but it's usefulness is limited compared to the Switch 2 potential.

Will be interesting to see how it alters the dynamic of the 3 consoles.

The Nintendo DLSS :smoke:

Difference is MS has a mandate that developers MUST create an S version for all series X games and it MUST have feature parity.

Because of that Xbox almost missed out on Baldur's Gate 3 and now lemmings will get it months after PS5 basically giving Sony a free timed exclusive.. Lol.

Nintendo does not have that mandate so developers can make the best PS5 version they want and then scale a port down to switch 2.

Big difference than what MS is doing with S.

It's not a big difference. If Devs make the best ps5 sx version they can then a Ditch port won't work.

Devs will have Ditch in mind the same way they have series s in mind. Ditch is going to be even harder than series s tho.

You use one game out of 1000s to make a point even when MS is allowing them to not have co op now on series s.

I don't see how that is any different.

But here's the thing... IF Switch 2 has more RAM than Series S (even if it's slower RAM) than there's still a case where you could still say the Series S is holding back gaming lol..  RAM IS the reason why people say Series S is holding back games.

Anyway, I don't personally agree that either of them do.  It's not holding devs back, after all, if people want to use BG3 as an example... the game still exists on PC and PS5.  If it was developed with all platforms in mind from the start, then it's done nothing to dissuade the devs from making the game they wanted and including those features in those versions.  Larian COULD have just released BG3 on Series X and S without split screen.

And just as a note, Microsoft is obviously open now to allowing certain developers and certain games a pass to not release with feature parity.  At least some good may have come from the debacle.

Some multiplats it will be hard to justify to get on PS5 because having dual portable mode and docked is just too appealing. Not for all, but a lot of them.

Series S will help Switch 2 multiplat development big time. The S should have been 16 gigs of RAM and 6tflops, MS underspecced that system so badly it's a joke for TV console.

Eventually as hardware progresses a hybrid console is a much more solid concept than a brick under your TV ever will be IMO. We're just not there hardwarewise yet but we are getting close. Switch 3 doing 3D would be amazing, Nintendo just attempted the concept 15 years a bit too early with the 3DS.

The parity mandate is the difference.
