I can't believe I'm saying this, I always hated the GoW series but this one is a different beast altogether. It's more Legend of Zelda than a pure action game and the puzzles, level design, traversal mechanics, secrets hidden throughout are so well thought out. The combat is also excellent, great boss fights too, I keep getting RE4 vibes while playing this. The game is phenomenal. If you have a PS4 and you haven't played GoW, you're doing yourself a great disservice. Get on that shit asap.

Platforming was shit in the old games and never formed an essential part of the experience. Using a tool as a basis to derive your puzzle structures =/= bad puzzles. Your complaint is as illogical as taking issue with all Portal puzzles being based on the portal gun, all Half Life 2 puzzles being based on the gravity gun or all BOTW puzzles being based on the same three abilities you get from the start. I've played it and I don't think the game is that good. I agree with the praise the game gets when it comes to it's narrative because it honestly surprised me with how good it is but the gameplay has plenty of faults. I don't see any aspect of it's gameplay being close to brilliant or well designed. I liked GOW more so far but they are attempting different things. If level design is split into small scale (eg Portal), middle size (eg Arkham Asylum) and large scale (eg GTA) then there are very different things that make it good. God of War does the small and middle size well while Zelda does the large scale very well Zelda has a huge open world that you can scale anything in. It wasn't just the CGI animations (which were a selling point at that time) but the CG backgrounds during gameplay. FF on N64 would have been totally different. This is from the tech demo they were working on at the time using N64 hardware: lol, they made the right call. PSOne was also a more popular platform, even before FF7.

Final Fantasy VII and IX don’t hold up at all today so really not a big deal. I’ve already got X and X-2 on my PS3. Zodiac age sounds slightly compelling to be able to play in handheld form but as great as XII was I’d rather not have to return to a 2006 game to experience a great FF game. Still, TCHBR.
