Unreal Engine update for Switch

None of that matters if the resulting bandwidth ends with the same data transfer rates... That's the in and out of the entire system, everything is funneled through it; and that funnel is the same size as the 360/PS3's...

You're conflating SPEED of the transfers with the SIZE of what is being transferred. 

 

LPDDR4 at 25GBs is transferring TWICE as much than DDR3 is at 25GBs AT Minimum.  And at best it can transfer up to FOUR TIMES as much at the same speed. 

 

In layman's term, the 360's 2 seater car is driving at 25 Mph vs the Switch 4 seater car at 25 Mph. 

 

Even though both cars are driving the same speed, the Switch car is transporting twice as many people as the 360 car.  (At minimum) 

 

LPDDR4 is much better than DDR3.  That is not even debatable.

I'm not conflating anything, they're one and the same and you obviously have no understanding of what you're talking about. 

 

GIGABYTES PER SECOND, it's a measurement of data size and transfer speed. That means the maximum amount of data that can be parsed through the memory interface per second is 25 GB's. 

 

25 GB/s is 25 GB/s, it doesn't matter how you arrive at that figure, it doesn't matter what the memory is doing differently on an internal level, the end result is the same. 

 

It can only ever feed that amount of bandwidth to the CPU and GPU. Now the memory can handle that operation more efficiently, consume less power and have a lower thermal workload, but if its bandwidth is 25 GB/s then its peak bandwidth capability is still the same as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

 

Trying to drum it up to sound like it's some space age technology to subvert this reality doesn't actually change it.

LPDDR4 being better than DDR3 is not space age technology.... it's called a FACT. 

 

Here are the undisputed FACTS. 

 

Data rates

DDR3 - 2133

LPDDR4 - 4266

 

Burst Length

DDR3 - 4, 8

LPDDR4 - 16, 32

 

LPDDR4 is better than DDR3, this is a fact no matter how you spin it.

While I'm not going to get into the fanboy shit about it... 25GB/s of bandwidth is 25GB/s of bandwidth... regardless of the improvements to the memory.  The only differences which would have any real bearing on performance, come down to texture compression and latency.  There's also power draw and form factor of course.   With low memory bandwidth like the Switch, having low latency is extremely important.  Improvements to texture compression is nice because being able to send more textures through that 25GB/s of course helps.  Other than that... it's literally "Low Power DDR4".. that's the purpose of it.

 

Regarding these improvements to the engine.  Great.  Anything that can help make developers lives easier and eek out any extra visuals or performance the better.  Just don't be expecting any huge differences in visuals or performance.  This isn't going to be bumping fps up drastically or anything.
