The issue with first party output is money

Recommended Posts

The risk/reward is the most important part. Let's take Sony for example this year

1. Spiderman, this probably had a budget of $100 million

2. SOTC cost $20 million at the very least

3. God of War was easily a $50+ million production

4. Detroit also cost $50 million

This is not counting their other smaller out titles.

If we look at their future titles

Death Stranding, TLOU2, easily have a budget approaching $100 million each. Days Gone, Ghosts of Trushima etc easily have a 50+ million budget. If we take marketing, promotions in brick and mortar stores etc. We're probably looking at Sony spending half a billion dollars a year, even if the return is good.

The big three all have these issues, the first party is a never ending battle between internal studios fighting for resources, for their games. Even Santa Monica had like 3-4 game pitches rejected and barely got the right to greenlight God of War.

All 3 also get endless pitches from independent third party studios, Bayonetta getting rejected by Sony is a good example and there is a very good example. They had limited resources and had to prioritize internal studios, if all 3 had the money they would greenlight almost every game thrown at them. If one of the three really wants games, they could easily pick up 10+ third party pitches within one year alone.

Sony is willing to open a few new AAA studios for example because of how successful the money return on investment is, but all their games NEED to be a success. $50-$100+ million dollars are games that are simply too big to fail, and I believe the absolute maximum any of the three will put out in terms of AAA games a year is 3, the risks just wont be allowed or greenlit by the upper management.

We've seen what it does to invest in third parties last-gen with MS and the 360 with all the timed exclusives. Short term? Great. Long term? Garbage.

Sony has the best approach, creating new IPs for themselves and nurturing their studios. I mean who would have thought Guerrilla Games would produced a AAA open world game this gen.

Sony also produce a lot of mid tier budget titles, some of them turning out really good like Astro Bot.  Wipeout, Everybody's Golf, VR games, etc.

I find Nintendo non risk approach really bad. It's always the same successful IPs. Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Smash, Metroid, Splatoon 2 (first game was a surprise hit! quick we need a rehashed sequel for Switch!). All the other games they make are low budget/risk affairs. The only new IP they have produced this gen is Nintendo Labo, let that sink in for a moment.

MS tried to take some risks with Sunset Overdrive, ReCore, Sea of Thieves, etc but they absolutely suck at picking the right games. So now they are back to Forza, Forza, Gears, Halo. Buying B-rate studios. Yawn.
