UK Charts: SSBU tumbles from #1 to #4, RDR2 regains #1 position

Red Dead Redemption 2 has retaken the No.1 spot in the UK physical games charts four weeks after it last held the position.

 

It does mean last week's No.1 - Super Smash Bros Ultimate - has taken a tumble down to No.4. It seems like a heavy fall, but actually sales only dropped 52 per cent week-on-week, which is a decent result for a game in its second week on sale

I understand that, that's decent for "a game", but this isn't "a game", this is Smash. This is the game sheep have been waiting 14 months for since the last big game Nintendo had, and sales dropped by over half in the second week and it fell to 4th place.

This is the UK only...... Pokémon is busy outselling RDR2 and COD at retail in the US and selling gangbusters all over the world. 

 

and Smash is busy pushing towards 5 million for launch month.

Empirically speaking the game doesn't have much left in terms of legs, the growth opportunity is not there.

 

With a system with an install base of 100 million it did 13.29 million LTD, with an install base of 73 million it did 9.35 million LTD. What seems to be happening is the people that were going to EVER buy Smash basically did, remember all that "biggest preorder ever" stuff? Yeah, that was the core, and they've been exhausted. 

 

These sales now are the ones who didn't have the opportunity to get it last week, the next week will be stragglers, and the subsequent forever coming after that will be random sales here and there. If it did 5 million in its first month like Goober is thinking there's not much gas left in the tank.

I'm not saying it's a failure, it's done great but like a lot of Nintendo games this is a franchise that is susceptible to the whims of the core. If it does 5 million in a month I'd say with an install base of 27 million or so that has exhausted a lion's share of that core. It's obviously going to keep selling but it's not like this was a game introduced to a player base of 50 or 60 million or even beyond that. In terms of Breath of the Wild that was more or less a reboot or reinvention of the franchise, it's an atypical Zelda game doing atypical numbers.

You have NO metric or credibility for telling how a game SHOULD or SHOULD NOT sell with a userbase of 27 million.

 

There are many people buying the Switch, and they are buying it for Pokemon first, and they won't get around to buy Smash until later.

 

There are many people buying the Switch, and they are buying BOTW and Mario Odyssey or Mario Kart 8 (because the game is like an exclusive to them since they never had a Wii U)...............they haven't bought Smash yet, but they will.

 

They're called "Evergreen Titles" for a reason..............why are you trying to play stupid in the year 2018 and pretend that Nintendo games don't achieve that.

 

By your logic you are PROMISING US.............GUARANTEEING TO US that Smash Bros will never see a return to the NPD Top 10 in the Year 2019?
