They were supposed to switch from woman in the real world to man in the matrix, but it was cut due to that being controversial in the 90's. Confirmed by the Wachowskis themselves. It also celebrated masculinity in a lot of ways The Matrix was a story written by two transgender people about living in a world where you feel trapped in a body you don’t feel is real and being given the chance to wake up.
