Not a hardware spec or ability. It is and it's also not, system limitations come into play hence the Xbox One X having a 60 FPS mode in Forza Horizon 4 and Gears of War 4 which is not on the base system. If they can do it they sometimes will, if they can't they won't.

Can you imagine being in 2019 and playing on a base PS4 or Xbox One? There's not going to be a transition during the next console cycle, there's no reason for a mid-gen console to exist. By one-off fluke you mean the necessity to support 4K, then yes. The mig-gen refreshed consoles were released when 4K TVs were just about the only option for mid-to-high range TVs, which were mostly 4K. It is jut now in the last couple of years that even low end TVs are mostly 4K as well. If there is a mid-gen refresh next generation it'll be to better support 8K resolutions. Again as it's been established forever hardware isn't where they make money. But it's still a decline if the same people are buying the hardware and not new people, but that can't be calculated by anyone but Sony and Microsoft. Also last gen lasted like 8 years. Bro... the mid gen consoles propped up Sony and MS gaming division since launch till now. If it wasn't for that both consoles would have seen huge declines. This has been confirmed by NPD themselves. There's no danger of the actions and reasons of 4K this gen being some kind of tipping point for new hardware next gen.

Voidler 1,675
Good tactic by Sony to get this stuff out early. We know the baseline of next gen, I expect they’ll adjust from here based on what we learn about MS. Targeting early 2020 but ready to push back to late 2020 and add some additional bells and whistles if MS play the power game

That's what a lot of people said about 4K, but here we are, 4K is 90% of TVs selling today. Edit: Not to mention, it all happened within the same decade. Playstation Tablet 1,725
Refreshes can have multiple marketing gimmicks. From framerate to resolution to improved ray tracing to whatever. All they really need to say games look/play better and the target audience will buy them. Plus there is a demographic that just buys the more premium version of a product when they enter an ecosystem and won't settle for the cheaper option just by the virtue of that alone. -GD-X★ 7,729
don't expect 8k for another 5+ years. even by then, people will be more than content with their 4K.

We won't be seeing games like Hellblade, Doom, etc. being ported as often or at all.

Doesn't matter how you feel or think about it. 8K TVs are going to eventually replace 4K as the standard offering and despite you or others not moving on, technology will continue to move forward to sell those products. Just like PS4 Pro and One X pushed forward to support 4K despite the adoption rate.
