And then there is Xbox. Consoles are a unique thing. They are television-attached gaming devices, as opposed to like general computing platforms. You’re not doing spreadsheets there. And so it was a different experience and also generally consoles over their history are subsidized hardware and so the hardware recoup some money from software sales. Epic is completely satisfied that their economic models are fair. If a bunch of developers get together and decided to make a console, we would probably do something similar. Funding hardware through software is a completely sensible plan. Epic loves Microsoft. MS has made some drastic changes in the last 2 years honestly, with regards to how they view their gaming platform, open source software, and Windows. People completely misunderstood exactly what Tim was complaining about before... MS moving in the direction of walling developers to release games through the Windows Store and fundamentally changing which API they must use at a system level IS completely unacceptable for an "open platform" such as Windows. Tim creating Epic Game Store and paying for exclusives is not even close to the same thing as that. Buying exclusives and removing them from Steam, or stopping them from releasing there is again.. NOT the same thing. That's competition on an open platform. That's not "walling it in".. like he was worried MS was going to attempt to do. But MS has changed a lot. They're now open sourcing a lot of their APIs and software that people would never have expected. They are creating software stacks to work across all platforms and integrate everywhere. They seem to be giving up on UWP in the sense that they aren't really pushing for it to be adopted beyond what they've already done with it... and they've been easing up with Windows and making it less intrusive with forced updates and the like. Essentially, they've been shifting focus for a while now. Windows is no longer the be all and end all of their business, they're easing up on trying to lock it down, and are now expanding their platforms and services to be accessible everywhere on all devices.
