Because it's not a launch console, it's an optional upgrade for those willing to spend the money and invest into a 4K ecosystem, most are content with the base systems. 

 

Also the PS4 had the power gauntlet for the first four years, quite literally the highest sales volume period there's been. So you were in fact incorrect, the most powerful console won this generation.

VR isn't that immersive, your brain is telling you to take this contraption off your head most of the time you're using it.

Except Pro continued to win being the weakest. Then Switch beat both being weaker than both significantly. All because of Games. as usual.

Any power difference really won't matter in the end, they'll both be close enough.  That said.. if one has an obvious advantage over the other in some way, then it could affect things.  That goes from one having better dev tools over the other (easier to work with), if one has accelerated RT and the other doesn't, console features, and most obviously.. price.

There is no "except", the most powerful console of the generation won, it was at 70 million sales when the Xbox One X launched.

The only gigantic advantage would've been something PS3 esque where the Cell was such a pain to dev for. We know that isn't happening this gen or ever again. 

 

The difference this time around probably focus less on power than ever before. Services and Games more important than ever. We are going to see how much choice matters vs exclusivity.

Well we all know the win isn't about real world performance. It's more of commitment win here, and prestige of brand. If MS loses it'll be take by people that they aren't as serious as they we positioning themselves to be, it'd be taken as a morale lose by the fanbase.

 

The Xbox fanbase meltdowns aren't about power really, it's just they've been getting nothing but bad news.

Hardcore lemmings will definitely be hurt if the next Xbox isn't more powerful than PS5.. because basically announced with the X that being the most powerful is extremely important to them.  Being the place where games play best and all that shit... so regardless of what Lemmings would admit.. yes it would definitely be demoralizing to them after the X.  Most certainly because if they didn't have MP games and performance to hold over Cows heads, they wouldn't really have anything, since PS games are mostly on another level visually from Xbox.  If they don't have the games, and they don't have the power, and they don't have the price.... if they don't have any single one of those... it's going to be tough for them again.

People seem to pretend that all these millions of casuals watch Digital Foundry or something. Power itself doesnt matter, it's how well you market it.
