That's exactly what Netflix is trying to do.

 

The only thing that is stopping them is that the Academy Awards will qualify a movie to be nominated for one of their awards unless it had a theatrical release.

 

But the other thing you are missing is that video games are designed for specific hardware. You can't force a developer to design for all types of hardware.

 

Whereas a movie is presented in universal format that any theater can play.
