XSX if it had variable clocks

Recommended Posts

Looks like Sony is going to be well underpowered

On the other hand, the Sony PS5 has something called a variable clock rate. What that means is that the console will not run the GPU at 2.23 GHz all the time. Since Microsoft's clock is a static number, just because PS5's clock rate is variable makes the 10.28 TFLOPs number uncomparable to the Xbox Series X and misleading. This is because XSX is displaying the "sustained TFLOPs" figure while PS5 is displaying the "peak TFLOPs" figure.
The fact that the XSX has 44% higher CU count is something that the PS5 simply cannot overcome. Microsoft might actually have underclocked its own console to make way for a "fine wine" philosophy as we have seen in the past. In fact, if they were to approach a dynamic clocking philosophy as well, they can hit an astounding 14.6 TFLOPs figure (using the PS5 clocks) - which is absolutely insane for a console. That said, you don't want to do that. Optimizing games ishard and having a static clock with no power fluctuation shenanigans is always easier to work with than a dynamic approach.

Yea.  Alex from DF say that developers working on PS5 have told him that essentially they have 2 modes to choose from.  One that favors the GPU clocks, and one that favors the CPU clocks.  They essentially have to choose.  Then the system will manage power between them to maximize that component.

Basically Cerny's trying to make it sound like the PS5 will operate at 10TF "most of the time" but that's not actually true and has some caveats.   It's essentially a 9TF machine... they just tried REALLY hard to push to hit that 10TF mark for marketing.

The funny thing about the PS5 is that the heavier the system load gets i.e. more graphically intense games; the weaker it becomes because it's forced to underclock to maintain thermals.

That is the dumbest shit I think I've ever seen, they should have just kept it at 9.2 and called it a day without introducing all these convolution which will undoubtedly piss developers off.

Game pass will have a crazy amount of games by the time XSX comes out. Sony is already behind in the subscription model. Cranking out one movie game a year is no longer going to save the playstation brand.

Maybe in the beginning but I don't think there will ever be a gap like there was this gen.

Yes there will... Xbox will again only appeal to the US gamer and the European and Asian market will shun it again :trump3:
