There's a pretty wide assortment of HDR ranging from 'Technically HDR because it adheres to the HDR10 standard and is capable of reading HDR signals' to per pixel dimming, brightness that makes an atomic bomb look like child's play, and maximum black luminance so low even Cthulu would blush at the level of darkness. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Whereas OLEDs do it more logically. Its bright besides genuinely darkness. Also, be forewarned, on Samsung QLEDs, when playing video games in low-latency mode, it cuts display features in order to get the response time down low, and some of the features that are affected is HDR. This isn't true whatsoever, you make it out like the brightness capability is something bad when it's absolutely not. That's an inherent advantage of LCD, the ability for the backlit LED's to reach a level of luminosity simply not possible with OLED cells. Another thing is that LED TV's are close to parity with OLED now in terms of black levels. Full array has added so many zones it's basically just as good with all of the advantages of LED with none of the disadvantages of OLED. Micro-LED matches OLED at an imperceptible level again with none of OLED's disadvantages, literally millions of LED's. Also Game Mode on ANY modern TV OLED or LED disables certain features because it reduces processing load. That is how you're able to get lower latency, that processing is diverted to the input connection. Furthermore HDR is not affected in Game Mode, you might see a minute degradation in things such as text because it's no longer doing additional processing on the image but HDR is totally unrelated. HDR works best when you have a fair amount of contrast between light and dark. LCDs/LEDs probably achieved this better in ambient-lit environments. But in rooms where you are going to dim lights or turn them off entirely, OLED achieves this contrast better. This has to do with how your own eyeballs perceive the contrast between light and dark. LEDs are getting better, they've close the gap considerably, but they still can't get to what OLED can achieve with low-light/darkness. And also, OLEDs are not like LEDs when in low-latency mode. OLED don't lose nearly as much features as LEDs. HDTVtest did a comparison between LG OLED and Samsung QLED in Game Mode, and that is what easily sold me on buying a LG OLED. For basically any mode, in the Samsung QLED, when turning on HDR, it goes SUPER bright that it pretty much throws the general brightness of the picture quality out of whack. When watching a movie that has a very dark scene, the QLED has to bring down the brightness in order to achieve sufficient dimming, and this is reduced even more if you turn on white subtitles in the middle of a dark scene. And lastly, in gaming mode, the Samsung QLED simply CAN'T do local dimming correctly, because it doesn't have enough to time to do. Vincent devotes an entire video on gaming mode comparisons here. This video drives the point home, especially at the 8:46 mark. micro-LEDs will eventually match OLED. But that ain't coming for another 4-5 years. Honestly save your money and buy an OLED, LCD will always look washed out even with local dimming.
