Sony dumps $250 million into Epic, now a minority stakeholder

Eh, it's not THAT big of a stake.  I think it's more like yes, there will be some marketing stuff, maybe some Fortnite stuff... Epic will continue to hype up the PS5.. and a mutual reward with PS games on PC through Epic Games Store possibly.

I think Sony just invested some because they see Epic growing even more in the future, and want in on it to get some of that return.  It's a free long term payoff.

But it is an actual stake. Outside of outright purchasing of developers, who actually has stakes in major 3rd parties (and Epic is beyond a major third party at this stage). We were like, damn, Epic partnering with Sony, when we saw the UE5 reveal and that was just marketing based. This goes so far beyond that.

Of course it's also a great investment that will see a good long term return but it provides so much beyond that. The expertise that Sony get from being in bed with Epic is pretty massive.

God you people are losing your fucking minds, and it's subsequently making me lose mine... Unreal Engine is open source, it's free to develop with, every tool and feature of the engine will be available to anyone developing anything for it.

My god you guys have went off the deep end.

The second I pressed 'submit reply' I was awaiting a Dyno reply

Did I say it's not going to be available to everyone? Has UE previously ran a lot better on certain hardware than others? yes. If you don't think a team can make an engine to take advantage of specific qualities of a hardware then you really are losing your mind. Why do you think most first party games look and run so much better than 3rd party engines.

I mean companies like Tencent purchase stakes in every company they can where they see growth potential.  Sony is likely looking at Epic and since Epic is raising money, they figure it's a very safe bet to make some easy money.

They haven't spent nearly enough money to have any kind of influence IMO.  It's more like Epic sees Sony as a great partner to work with, they're the most popular console, they have a particular piece of hardware which Epic views as integral to the future of where they want to take rendering technology.  Epic courted them, and it payed off.  Epic got some investment, it's WIN/WIN for both.  Epic is only going to grow and grow.  I think there's things which could happen which have mutual benefits for both, like Sony getting good marketing having potentially the most technologically impressive engine marketed towards PS5's advantage.. and Epic can see some potential Sony games on their store on PC.

This isn't like Tencent buying 40% of a company where they have a very strong influence.  It's a tiny tiny slice which benefits both.. but isn't a huge deal in the grand scheme of things.
