Imran Khan: "Sony has locked timed exclusivity for some huge and widely known multiplatform games"

Recommended Posts

It may be that Sony is seeing that Microsoft created a weak point in which they could exploit for just this specific time being.

Xbox games may actually be gimped because Microsoft forced their first and second party studios to design their games for Xbox One backwards compatibility. (and I bet xCloud is still running on Xbox One S boards, therefore they have to have a version of the game designed for that spec)

So, this is going to happen for two years. But Microsoft can say "well, at least our third-party multiplats should run and look better on our next-gen hardware during those two years."

And then Sony thinks to themselves: "hmmmm, why don't we just temporarily stop them from getting major third-party multiplats for two years, and absolutely cripple their start, and after two years they'll be way too far behind for it to matter anymore. And all it will cost us is some money to achieve that."

Hell, Sony could do something like telling Ubisoft, Activision, and EA that for the first two years, they'll pay them money for temporary exclusivity and pay for marketing, and ALSO lower their console licensing fee for the first two years, so that the third-party publisher gets to keep more of the sales revenue.

So much for the warchest. :mj:

The phrase "they just didn't want to pay the asking price" might be the most troubling part of that post.

If Microsoft does not want to pony up money for a temporary exclusive or full-on third party exclusive...........what do you think their payout is going to be for all of those smaller devs putting games on GamePass?

Sony is paying third-party devs for exclusives, EGS is paying third-party devs for exclusives.

And Microsoft is telling them "we'll give you a small percentage of the GamePass revenue, oh but if you sign up with GamePass you have to stay exclusive to us and you can't sell your game anywhere else."

Pretty much. Microsoft blew their load buying a bunch of mid to low tier studios who produce 5.0s and 6.0s so they have no more cash to burn on what Sony is doing right now.
