Goldman Says Almost a Quarter of Temporary Layoffs in U.S. to Be Permanent

Quote

The rehiring of temporarily laid-off workers will continue to bolster the U.S. labor market’s recovery in the months ahead, but Goldman Sachs Group Inc. expects almost a quarter of those layoffs to become permanent. In the early months of the pandemic, employers shed more than 22 million people from their payrolls.

The staggering figure had a small silver lining: the majority of those layoffs were billed as temporary. More than 18 million people were classified as temporarily unemployed in April, the most on record.

When state economies began to reopen, the rehiring of many of those workers helped drive the labor market’s rebound in May, June and July. And with more than 9.2 million unemployed still on temporary layoff, “the labor market seems poised for additional large job gains later this year,” Joseph Briggs, an economist at Goldman Sachs, wrote in a research note on Friday.

"But don't worry, under Biden it'll be just like this but WORSE!!!! "-conservatives

For real, shit is looking really bad and if we follow the 1918 flu pandemic, this fall is going to be worse. Not to mention two hurricanes about to hit at the same time and shit. Fuck 202. :D

Meanwhile, they are reporting on "discoveries" about Covid that were made in China months ago. This experience has taught me the so-caleld "global medical community" don't communicate with each other well at all and many English language news sources simply don't care what happens in China so they never bothered to follow things there except for repeating "forcing people to stay at home = undemocratic ! "

Why does Trump even need to bypass congress to get us any stimulus packages? What the fuck is the holdup Nancy?

Why do you think house Democrats are the source of the holdup?

They (the House) passed the second Cares act bill................MONTHS ago.

Yes, I said MONTHS as in plural.

This is the part where you'll pretend they didn't do any such thing, or just run away from this thread.

Its ridiculous that Wall Street he been acting like things are all nice and good.

I think that there are people out there who are actively waiting on a market crash for them to come in and capitalize on it.

It almost feels like an instance of Wile E. Coyote running off a cliff, and he's gonna keep on running as long as he doesn't look down and realize there's nothing beneath him.

Wow maybe the "scientists" and the "epidemiologists" should have listened to the economists when they talked about cost benefit analysis of lockdowns.

No, maybe economist should've listened to scientists when they talked about the cost benefit analysis of pandemics.

The one thing that can't be completely managed, should be the event that everything else must base their decision-making on.

Why wouldn't they pass it? What Trump signed is considered "meager" at 400 a week.. That's the same thing we got in Canada which everyone praised. 500 a week here is the same as 400 a week there. Not sure what the deal is.  So much bickering and stalling on both sides.

The House already passed their bill.

This pathetic executive order from Trump is essentially taking money from the Social Security fund.

That's robbing Peter to pay Paul (and its only to pay Paul for three weeks, and its on a "approval" basis, and they have only approved three Republicans states so far..........so this is completely pointless what Trump has done).

Like I said, again..................the House passed a bill MONTHS ago. And Pelosi already made a comprimised on her bill to cut it down from 3 trillion in cost to 2 trillion.

And Pelosi called the House back in session this weekend.............Mitch McConnell still hasn't done shit, nor has he even called the Senate back to work.

Where exactly are you getting the idea that the Democrats are holding this up?

Gee. I wonder why this was such a bad idea... especially when it turned out to be another cold and flu season.

Then the federal government should've initiated one, nationwide shutdown, for all states, with strict rules back in March

Instead of letting it drag out and have states completely uncoordinated, and therefore allow infections to grow all over.

And............the CDC has reported that there has been 235,000 MORE DEATHS than usual for the first seven months of the year.

That is not a "normal cold and flu" season. So you are also wrong about that, as well.

The senate bill was for $200 a week.
