Original story: Well, this isn't what we wanted to hear. As Yakuza: Like a Dragon confirms that PlayStation 4 save data will not be carried over into the upgraded PlayStation 5 version, Gene Park of The Washington Post has said that this may be the case for many other current-gen titles you'll be able to get a free upgrade for. He says he has heard "a lot from different devs that PS4 saves won't work on PS5. Xbox Series X seems to bring your old save files with you". He then expands: "It's not strictly about [backwards compatibility], it's about PS5 upgrades like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales [and] Yakuza".

Hot Sauce 2,727
Oh, so that's what Sony meant when they said they believe in generations.
madmaltese★ 2,554
Update: Insomniac Games community director James Stevenson has now stated that, in the case of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales at least, your PS4 save will carry across to the PS5 if you utilise the title's free next-gen upgrade. This situation seems to suggest that cross-save has not been mandated by Sony and so some developers may opt not to support the feature.

However it's still messier than if Sony could just say "all your saves will work from PS4"

They already had to update the article cause they were wrong about Miles Morales and the rest is pure guessing based on Yakuza. Always great when you have to end your article with this: Again, we must stress that the claim is currently unconfirmed,

Looks like they don't know what the fuck they are doing. Especially for a system that they said it would be backwards compatible with PS3 and PS4. Then they said, no PS3. Then they said, not all PS4 games, just some. This from the same company that sells you the same game with a resolution bump and calls it "remastered".

If you’re wondering whether PS3/PS2 games will have backwards compatibility with the PS5, the answer is sort of. Physical disc versions of PS2 and PS3 games are not known to be backwards compatible right now with the PS5, though that could change with future news from Sony Interactive. MalaXmaS 646
This was one of the many articles lying around the internet back when PS5 was announced. Notice Sony was not disproving those claims. They were just playing along and deceiving their fanbase. This was thought solely because the fact that MS is indeed having original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One compatibility with Series X.
