I think this is a direct sequel which is not something this franchise normally does. I'd probably start off with the first one, but I think all the Atelier games are not really linked by story. I just read on the steam forum that the characters are from the first game but the story is its own standalone thing, so its not essential to play the first. Not sure if i like the combat, and the camera feels way too pulled in at times. But I do appreciate the light hearted tone and the characters have their charm so far.
