Russia has officially invaded Ukraine

LOL you know its bad when even cooke is able to explain it.

but not only that Germany is moving forward with cutting off Russia gas because they will not pay in rubles.

So, it appears that Russia did this to temporarily give itself a brief spike, but Germany is willing to call their bluff.

Except Germany isn't cutting off Russia's gas. They're still buying it up along with Russia's oil just like most of EU. And until that changes Russia will continue to have enough money to fund their war in Ukraine for the foreseeable future.

They're not going to pay in rubles. Which is Russia's requirement.

So they will be stopping that the moment Russia enforces it.

This german article cleared that up

https://www.zeit.de/wirtschaft/2022-03/gas-russland-rubel-dekret-wladimir-putin

Its paywalled but this is a summary of it

Quote

German newspaper "Die Zeit" is reporting that all the talk about Russia just accepting Rubel now is basically propaganda and practically not true.
What his decree is actually saying is that buyers need to create 2 accounts at Gazprom, one in Euro and one in Rubel.
Gazprom will accept payment in Euro, but is now obligated by the russian government to convert the euro into Rubel. Then Gazprom is paid for the gas with the Rubel they exchanged.
So basically it's an internal russian thing and doesn't change anything for anyone buying gas from them. Also it seems like about 80% of sold gas is already converted into Rubel in this way today, and this decree will just push this to 100%.
It's not expected to make a huge change on anything and is basically just propaganda for the russian people.

So basically nothing is changing.

then that is going to work in the west's favor in helping the Russian economy collapse if nobody in the world is accepting their money, but Russia has to accept everybody else's money.

This thread from this professor in Moscow is interesting. To sum it up, the sanctions have been completely ineffective so far. It'll be many more months before any real damage is felt among the Russian populace.

That's how sanctions work. Cuba had sanctions on them for like 60 fucking years. So yeah, genius they won't destroy Russia in 5 weeks. You keep bringing this up like you're clever or something.

Explain that to the armchair economists who were celebrating the sanctions and declaring that Russia was done for, their economy was being sent back decades back to the soviet union days, supermarket shelves would become empty, Russians would quickly rebel and overthrow the government. Looking back those claims were all laughable and only existed so people like Biden could garner more support from the people, especially with the mid terms coming up.

Russia's GDP is estimated to drop by 20% by the end of the year. Thats a lot but its nowhere near enough to make a difference in the long run. For comparison Ukraine's economy is estimated to shrink by a whopping 40%.

Without the west crippling their fossil fuel industry, Russia will not be defeated by sanctions anytime soon. They need to be defeated militarily first, and only by arming Ukraine to the teeth will that be possible.

They need the planes, tanks, artillery, Anti-ship missiles, and anti-air systems that they've been asking for. Especially more important now since they're transitioning to be more offensive oriented operations to retake territory captured by Russia.

And funnily enough, despite the narrative that right wingers are on Putin's side in this war its been the UK and their conservative government that has provided the most amount of advanced weapons in the least amount of time to Ukraine so far. A week since they've been delivered Ukraine's soldiers have already been trained on using the Starstreak missile system and are already taking down aircraft with it. Its far more advanced than the other MANPAD systems they've been getting like the Strelas from Germany or the Stingers from the U.S.

I don't know about military logistics but when people talk about right wingers they are talking about American ones, not British ones. Which is why American Right wingers get picked apart whenever they face a British one. Most right wingers here are like you. Just saying anything in the moment regardless of truth or reality or context to have an answer.

So the Russians tucked tale and ran? I think it’s safe to say that Russia really was never a super power outside of having a nuclear weapons inventory. :mj:

Putin must be embarrassed beyond belief.

Is your internet access limited or something? Liberals all over the place were combining UK conservatives and the ones over here in the U.S., claiming that they're all compromised and have Russian interests. Many of them rightfully shut up when they realized the UK is doing more to help than many other western countries.

Nah they gave up on Kyiv and are going to instead redeploy to the Donbas area. Claiming that is basically going to be Putin's last shot at a victory of some kind. Maybe throw in the land bridge with Crimea if Mariupol falls, but I don't Ukraine is just going to sit back and let them do that.

The screens and videos coming out of the liberated towns and villages north of Kyiv are fucking sickening.....loads of executed civilians, many with their hands tied behind their backs. Even a mass grave was found in one area. These are looking to be the most egregious war crimes committed in Europe since WW2.

Yes, "plenty of liberals". Lmfao you sound like a child caught lying. My fault for not following every single liberal on Twitter and reading every tweet they make. Thanks for zero examples outside of a videogame forum.

Cool. So again Russia has proven they’re not a world power, gotcha. :mj:
