@Ramza   Looks like I’m getting PSVR 2 day one

seeing this a while back made me want to try it:

What are the main hyped PSVR2 games so far aside from Horizon?

Nothing much so far. A lot of Quest 2 and PC ports but nothing that comes to mind.

I think Resident Evil 4 VR mode is exclusive to PSVR2. So, there's that.

John Carmack is about graphics and tech.

And he's leaving because the Quest product line is fixing to go stagnant on graphics and tech.

There's a rumor that HTC is going to release new VR hardware, and their specs are going to be in the same vicinity of the Quest 2.

The VR industry is consolidating and stick to one particular spec level, and its just going to stay there.

Of course the industry is consolidating around the only thing that has found any amount of real success and potential.

There's currently only so much you can do with stand alone headsets from a power perspective.  But if you read Carmack's entire internal letter, you see where his problem lies.  Too much wasted energy internally battling on the direction it should evolve.. and since he knows he's not going to change Zuckerberg's direction, he's bouncing.

The thing about VR is... it will never go away.  As time goes on and technology evolves enabling new paradigms... VR will always resurface, and they will push into the market again, and again.. until they find the right product at the right time, with the right applications.

LOL you're now parroting mid-level management presentations.

Meta's hardware spec is not going to be successful in:

-The financial sector

-The sports sector

-The medical sector

It will clearly bomb as a social media device with the ideas that Meta is doing, if only based on the fact that Meta will want to keep it completely locked down.

All of its accomplishment was as an introductory VR gaming device.

Zuckerberg is creating the same problem Phil Spencer has created.................if you don't lead the way with exclusive, top-of-the-line games that show the rest of the industry what to do, it doesn't matter how you try to advertise the device, or what other features it has. Nobody cares.

Carmack probably thought that the Quest 2 was just one PHASE of hardware upgrades that he was expecting Oculus to continue climbing until they reached the pinnacle of VR design.

Once he realized Facebook/Meta was no longer on that course, he bolted.

Better hope Apple creates an absolutely stunning piece of VR lenses, because that's the only way this industry is going to get "jumpstarted" again.

You're not arguing anything I said...  Tech will evolve, and open up new possibilities for VR.  The tech isn't there yet at mass market prices for the consumer, and everything else isn't where it needs to be either for any of the sectors you mentioned.

And you very specifically mentioned the QUEST product line...  The industry is consolidating around that hardware level... because again, as I said... there's only so much you can do at that price/power and form factor currently.  And the Quest is the ONLY VR device to really find success at all... so that's what the industry is zeroing in on.

It will remain that way... until something else proves you can find success in a different segment.. and yes, it appears that Meta is no longer interested in pushing outward in those segments at the moment.

Quest 2 is honestly an amazing device, even with the problems Carmack points out. The only thing that glaringly sucks about it is the PC tether mode is anchored to Oculus/Meta's abandonware Windows app. If it worked seamlessly with SteamVR, it would be excellent.

The problem we have now is standalone mode is the first-class target, and it's just not powerful enough to deliver transformative experiences like Alyx. So devs have mostly abandoned big budget VR development (at least until PSVR2), and the native store is filled with glorified mobile games. It didn't have to be this way.

I still think Meta is in the best position to succeed in VR, but if they don't get their shit together, Valve is gonna come through with a standalone headset offering a much better gaming experience.

No it isn't.  Virtual Desktop is far better.. and you have complete control over it.

The Quest 2... connected to a powerful PC... is still far and away the best overall VR device and combo.  You have the best portable stand-alone VR system, and the ability to play all SteamVR (and OculusVR if you want) games.

PSVR2 will come, will get a few nice games.. and then the same thing will happen as it did with PSVR1.  Interest will drop.  Nobody wants to be forcibly tethered to some device 100% of the time.

I'm talking about the frictionless, Meta-approved, first-class feature set. Sure I can use Virtual Desktop, but I don't think you can just tell anyone to go out and get a Quest 2 assuming they're going to be able to play Half-Life seamlessly. It's a kludge. I agree with your other points tho, especially about PSVR2.
