In retrospective why on earth did MS let Bungie go?

Recommended Posts

It doesn't seem like there's an official story. From what I gather, Bungie were tired of making Halo, and MS was not willing to give them publishing control over Destiny. Afaict Bungie had to buy their independence from MS. It seems a bit weird for a wholly owned subsidiary, but that's what I see online.

Because MS thought they were on top of the world. At the time they figured rehashing HALOGEARSFORZA every year, combined with a slew of kinnect shovelware and 30 day exclusive CoD map packs was all gamers ever needed and therefore to them it didn't matter who made Halo so long as they had a Halo to complete the rehash trifecta. They probably thought all that TV TV TV shit they were planning for Xflop Done was an ace up their sleeves too.

Microsoft doesn't understand gaming so you need to look at all decisions they make in that light. That's why none of their decisions make sense, because they're fucking clueless about an industry they have been in for 20 years. Its only their fortune which has kept them afloat.

Phil Spencer thinks today's MS could've kept Bungie on board. He's totally wrong. They've only gotten more conservative in pumping out franchises long after their prime. If Bungie wanted to stop making Halo, imagine how much worse it is at 343, a studio that only exists to make Halo.

There are rumors that Sony is setting up a studio to do that for Uncharted and I think it's a big mistake.

Smart move on Bungie's behalf, throwing them a few employees and convincing Microsoft "hey these guys will definitely be able to keep the Halo brand going at 343."

And Microsoft bought it, like the dumbfucks that they are.

But, I also imagine that Bungie must've had some partial ownership of the Halo IP, therefore any new product that Microsoft makes, Bungie would probably still be getting a cut of it, maybe certain Bungie executives.

So Bungie told them "let us go, we'll help you setup 343, and we'll give you complete ownership of the Halo IP"
