Im not gonna lie, these devices have given me a newfound appreciation for the Switch. While its hardware is clearly dated, what Nintendo accomplished a whole 6 years ago when it came to the size, weight, battery life, and price of the unit along with the fact that its dead quiet, is definitely laudable. I think Switch 2 is going to impress us.

Yup everything worked out the gate day 1.   These handheld PCs including the deck are not ready for mass market use at all.

steamdeck feels like a console. it's amazing how quick it is to get going. rog will probably be a bit clunky, initially.

Ally will be even better when it runs SteamOS.

Because they know things like the Ally will always be niche, but Steamdeck has the mindshare and stole the thunder from the Switch.

:kaz:

When and where did that happen?

Deck is currently doing worse than Xbox while Switch is back at #1 for April and will most likely repeat that for May.

While the deck is more user friendly than the other PC handhelds... The deck is still incredibly niche compared to the Switch.

Im very close to buying it.....but Im trying to see if there's enough PC games coming out soon that I would be interested in playing. I don't want to buy it and then just have it collect dust.

Totally get that

Mindshare among gaming communities, not mass marketshare.

Deck became a darling online and created a lot of buzz, which is why sheep like yourself were triggered over it day one but seem relaxed with more niche devices like the Ally.

News flash the Ally and the deck are on the niche boat.

Go on any gaming community right now and the Switch mindshare still runs laps around deck.

From day 1 I said deck wouldn't be a threat, it never was a threat and continues to not be a threat.

But For some odd reason you keep wanting me to be triggered by deck... When there is nothing about it to be triggered about. Its a non factor in the grand scheme of things.

For the enthusiasts who love it and want to Tinker with it... great for them.  Perfect for that very small subset..

PC handhelds are here to stay and will get a lot better. SteamOS reduces the tinker-factor of PC gaming bigly.

Definitely.  This form factor of PC device is starting to become quite popular.  Anecdotally I've seen quite a few people posting in various forums that it's their favorite way to game these days, even over PC itself.

It's easy to see a world where these devices eventually hit the $300 sweet spot at the low end and appeal to the mass market sold in stores.

It's going to be interesting seeing where the Switch 2 lands in the scheme of price/power/performance.

Yes they are and they will get better as time goes by..... But at the current moment they're not ready.

All those current PC hand helds including the deck are basically beta tests that are being sold to consumers.

The beta is better than Nintendo has ever been.

Lol this thinly veiled shot, like Switch is so high class and perfected, as Nintendo sells gimped retro ports 3 gens in a row which are outdone by fan emulation

Nah, from jump you wanted me to be shook about a niche device.... That was weird then and still weird to this day that you're still doing that...

Why do you want me to be shook by the deck so much? Lol

That wasn't a shot. It's the reality of the situation... None of the handheld PCs are currently ready for mass market consumption.

Why are you so triggered by that reality?

Are any of these handheld gaming PC as of today ready for mass market consumption? Simple question.

They don't have to be. You're not buying into a dedicated ecosystem like Switch or Vita. If only 100 people buy the ROG Ally, theyre still getting an infinite library of games for years to come.

Are PC's ready for mass market consumption?  Because that's what this is...

Valve making Steam Deck work through a translation layer on a completely different OS isn't the same as the ROG Ally running Windows...  You seem to have just carried over that same argument from the Deck when the reality is that this device is essentially just a Windows PC.  If a handheld PC comes out and runs Windows.... it may have certain surface level issues due to the fact that the OS wasn't designed to scale down that small... and so companies like Ayaneo and Asus have built frontends to make it more manageable and "console like"...  They may not have the 100% focused user experience that consoles have (because they're also PCs...) but they improve the usability dramatically.. and will continue to do so.

That doesn't mean they aren't "mass market" ready devices though.  They're literally just PCs.  They're still currently too expensive, and these companies are making them as they are selling them, so it's too early to say how the market would react to them if they were sold on store shelves.

Yes PC is a mass market device as you can purchase pre packaged PCs that have fully dedicated user experience out the box where the most not tech person can easily use it.   Dells, HPs, Toshibas, Surface Books, Surface book pros, Surface laptops etc.

No Tinkering involved, mass market prices and mass mark availability.

Deck remains the best all-around option....not sure why some people are so hard to see it fail. Its good that more products are coming to tbe market for more choice though, Ally looks to be the one if you want pure power above everything else.

And it's not stupid Linux

Exactly.  And that's what this device is.

They're working towards that, it's not there yet price wise or ease of use wise.  Where a non tech savvy person can pick it up from retail and have everything just work out the box with no Tinkering etc.
