There were already tons of dirt cheap DVD players on the market by then. Yes, it was a genius move, as was Nintendo making their console a hybrid... and in both cases their extreme success can be attributed to serving additional markets outside of the traditional console market. I'd still put Switch at having more of an advantage, as Nintendo was already the established Handheld market leader and had big inroads into that market.
Sony including the DVD player function into the PS2 at launch was genius and it made it an Uber mass market device.
Just as Nintendo engineering a hybrid that knocks the functionality out the park from day 1 was also genius and a Uber mass market concept.
Still, it's important to remember there are far more gamers now than there was back then.. and $99 back then is still around $150 today.. which puts it close enough to the Switch Lite's price to where it's not really a matter of "accessibility".
