  1. Game Pass is a "better deal", at the cost of tanking MS' already rickety 1st party publishing, and probably taking Bethesda down with it.

Sony is right about this, day-1 subscription releases WILL lead to worse games at the high end.

PS Extra at least gets you the game-buffet experience that has been missing on PlayStation, and I think that's the right call.

  2. I think Intel will be a major 3rd player in the GPU space by next year. It's frustrating that they won't get their flagship desktop GPU out in Q2. But everything still points to 3070 performance, likely at far cheaper than Nvidia's cards are going for. That alone is the shakeup we need, and their vendor-neutral ML upscaling is icing on the cake.

Intel can potentially match the best differentiators from both AMD and Nvidia. They're obviously x86 masters, and can compete with APU/SoCs in portable devices like Steam Deck. They have a better commitment to open source drivers than Nvidia, which means they could power x86-based "consoles" running SteamOS very nicely. And there's some reason to believe Intel is ahead of AMD on dedicated ray tracing hardware. All exciting stuff, but we've been waiting too long for the actual reveal.

You know, it might actually be pretty smart that Sony packs PS Extra with third-parties that are ALREADY putting their product on Xbox Game Pass.

    So, like Mortal Kombat 11.

So, if Sony sees that Xbox brokered a deal with an indie developer to release their game on Day 1 for X amount of money, Sony can offer the same thing to the developer, and it shows up on PS Extra the same time it shows up on Xbox GamePass.

If a new consumer is deciding whether they want to jump into PS5 or XsX, and sees that Sony is mostly offering alot of the same third-party games on PS Extra as Xbox GamePass, then once again their own AAA exclusives are going to be what sets them apart.

Jim Ryan isn't trying to beat GamePass, or even match it, exactly. He's just trying to neutralize it just enough.

This is true. The only advantage Extra seems to have over std Gamepass is Sony claims 400 games while Gamepass claims 100. Probably it will be most of the same 3rd party games.

There you go. They're not going to risk their high-value single-player AAA exclusives and turn them into sub-par experiences by throwing them into a rental service.

Its good to see that Jim Ryan is clearly leveraging more of the PS1-PS4 back catalogue for this rental service, rather than the important projects that they are working on now.

Yep I hope this does not change. Companies give away free games from a position of WEAKNESS. Sony started doing it when they were losing ground to the 360. Epic does it because they cannot compete with Steam. MS is betting the farm on it because they've lost every console generation they've been a part of.  There's no reason for Sony to get baited into a loser's business model.

  5. Last I checked PS' streaming tech is a little too shitty to enjoy. It's a generation behind GeForce and Stadia.

The middle tier for $100/yr could be good, but I want to see the whole list before I consider it. I don't see this revolutionizing PlayStation the way Gamepass has done to Xbox, but I honestly don't want it to. Sony goes big with first party, and I think MS is on its way to being the Netflix of games IN A BAD WAY. Netflix original content is so clearly produced by algorithm and MS is following in that. I don't want to see that happen to PlayStation.

A clear leg up for MS is Gamepass is a pretty good service on PC. I don't see Sony playing there any time soon.
