  1. Ever since I got my 280X I went back to Far Cry 3. Nice to play that game at a solid 1080p 60fps. I think I'm enjoying it more the second time through than the first :)

Figures I'd come in here only to see JonB and Twinfail hating on one of the Best Games out there.

As an open world game there are SOOOO many things I like about it.

    - I like how dangerous it is.

    - The hunting and crafting are great.

    - Liberating outposts is varied and enjoyable. And just as soon as you think you're dominating all you come across outposts that are significantly more challenging. Even when you die it just starts you on the outskirts of the outpost and you can easily try again, this time tackling it in a completely different way.

    - The animations are great ( you feel like you have a body and aren't just a floating gun )

    - The world is beautiful and fun to explore.

  2. I don't think MS has ever gone with anything truly unique ( like the cell ), They just buy and modify existing chipsets.

They went from a 733mhz celeron and a GPU ( NV2A ) based on the same chipset as the GeFores 3's ( NV20 ). Then the 360 had an IBM PowerPC and a GPU based on ATI's r500(?) or r520(?) chipset.

They'll all be going with that approach next gen and it's all gonna come down to how much they're willing to spend, when they want to launch, and any contractual obligations if they apply.

I can't help but wonder if both Sony and Microsoft wanted to use the same chipset, if that would be allowed or if there are some kinds of "I got here first and have an exclusive contract" sort of factors.

  3. I can see MS going for Numbers 1 and 3. I believe Microsoft will go batshit insane on the hardware side meaning an expensive subsidized console. I have a difficult time imagining Sony not doing the same but it's possible their hand has been forced.

I don't see MS going batshit crazy. It would be insane of them, to have their competitors make day one profit off of hardware and they be the only ones losing money off of every console sold.

If they are the only one of the three who is either willing or able to pump out a monster console then doing so would provide other benefits. It's too early to know for sure what will happen. I REALLY like speculating about rumors. Even more than that I like piecing together the puzzle based on existing chipsets and trying to figure out which reports are credible and which aren't .

We can learn that they are basing their system on a certain chipset and assume A B and C but then at any time it can be revealed they they took that chipset and modified ____, added ____ and updated ____ so A B and C is now really E D and F :glad:

I can't wait for the speculation on what ____ hardware will be capable of

    Glavin :adhd:

  4. I believe this is what the "OBAN" CPU in the 720 will be based on...

    Posted Image

    Each "A2" is a "core"

It's possible they may use less cores in an attempt to improve yields, if they are a problem.

Now you're no longer arguing that th 720 will have 16 cores. 720 could easily get a 4 core cpu based on the A2 architecture which is exactly what the article talks about when it states the 18 core design was too costly.

Ultimately you can forget about consoles getting a cpu designed for super computing servers.

The closest we came to that was the cell qnd you see how that turned out. MS should focus on beastly GPU and RAM. I no longer believe cpu is as important as the other two components.

I even except sony reusing the same exact cell chip to save cost if that would help them go all out on gpu and ram.

No I'm saying that it's entirely likely that it will have 16 cores. It's been REPORTED to have 16 cores ( the Dev kit anyway ).

You seem to be arguing that it will only have 4 cores, not much of a jump up from the 360 which had 3.

Microsoft will no doubt also be putting in a Beastly GPU ( or two ) and 4 Gigs of RAM Minimum.

It's Sony's strategy that's likely going to be more humble. The latest rumor from Pastebin states that the dev kits have been upgraded ( quite substantially ) from what IGN has reported. They are a lot more powerful now. The reason stated was that there has been a lot of indecision within Sony asto the hardware strategy of the PS4. The latest word is that they have upgraded from 2 Gigs to 4 Gigs of RAM ( after extreme protest from 3rd party and 1st party devs ) and that they will be putting out a Powerful PS4, just not a Batshit crazy powerful PS4.

It's HIGHLY likely that Microsoft will be putting out a more powerful console than Sony next Gen.

  5. While they both share the same A2 architecture you're talking about a completely different CPU, even with a different number of cores. And then you're using an article from 2011 to try and convince yourself it would be too expensive years later in 2013 LOL

Too expensive? No. Expensive? Maybe. The 720 is going to be a BEAST afterall :glad:

The CPU is using the A2 architecture and it has 18 cores. If there was any CPU we can go by to assume what 720 might use based on this rumor than this is the CPU.

And yes this article from 2011 has Intel (you know the people who actually are making these CPU) stating it's expensive even in a high margin market.

Even if IBM is able to repurpose the cores of other PowerPC architectures, designing and implementing a custom SoC for a single niche market, albeit a high-margin one, is an expensive proposition.

Intel has spoken and the more I read up on this the more unlikely 720 will have 16 cores. 720 has a better chance of having 12GB of RAM than a 16 core CPU.

What you consider to be likely or unlikely is completely irrelevant.

What you consider to be too expensive ( especially since you don't even know the cost ) is also irrelevant.

It is LIKELY that MS will once again be licensing an IBM CPU design. If so, it can only be based on a known or a secret chipset. Most likely a known chipset with SOME customization. Even at this point we have narrowed things down to a very very small handful of options.

The A2 is an excellent high core, low power (watts) CPU for a console, and yes, you may very well be right about it being expensive. But "expensive" is a very time sensitive word in the world of electronics. MS may be completely willing to put in an expensive CPU for 2013 because they know that by 2014/2015 it will nolonger be expensive. This is exactly the strategy they have used for their last two consoles and is an ESSENTIAL strategy, especially if they are planning another 8 year long generation.

MS using a CPU that some people consider to be "OMG, so expensive and overkill" is LIKELY.

EDIT : I would also like to add that how many cores a CPU has is an irrelevant metric today as a judge of how powerful a CPU is. There are phones today with 4 cores, that the 4 core CPU in my 5 year old PC no doubt rapes.

When judging how appropriate a CPU design is for a console the most important metric isn't how powerful, but how powerful per watt ( efficiency ). The A2 fits well.

If you design a console that many people believe is "reasonable" one or two years before it even launches, then what you've done is design a console that is far too weak.

  6. PS4 is also rumoured to have two GPUs based on the 7000 series. The more these rumours come out, the more it sounds like AMD is offering Sony and MS the same thing

No, that's NOT what the IGN rumor says.

The rumor says that the PS4 will have an AMD 7670 series ( which is just a rebranded 6670, nothing amazing ).

The IGN rumor also says it will have AMD's A8-3850 APU, which consists of two elements.

    1. A quad core 2.9GHz CPU ( which echoes the pastebin article and all other articles about sony ditching the cell)

    2. An integrated 6550D - This is a LOW LOW end graphics card

So even a 6550D and a 6670 working together is still very much "weak sauce"

  7. If you're going only by an old IGN rumor then no the 720 GPU isn't looking too powerful.

Fortunately that old IGN rumor about 720 was never very credible and there are plenty of other sources which have something very different to say.

Multiple sources have confirmed this morning that the machine will have two GPUs. We’re waiting for final confirmation of specs, but the graphics cards are thought to be equivalent to AMD’s 7000 series GPUs

    http://ht.ly/a1eSh

The recent claim of the 720 having TWO 7000 series GPUs is completely different from the no doubt wrong claim from IGN about having only one 6670.

    And there is more.

Samaritan's return was the only taste of the next-gen we'd be getting at this briefing, but Mark Rein made it obvious that this was the visual target for the new wave of consoles and there was a brief implication that the mystery NVIDIA Kepler card's performance would be matched by whatever the console platform holders are working on now. Rein himself would know: sources close to Epic have told us that the company is working on next-gen target hardware from Microsoft right now - one source has even gone so far as to say to us that Samaritan is already running on whatever kit is currently being used to simulate the new Xbox.

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/digitalfoundry-unreal-engine-evolution

A 6670 running Samiratan - Impossible. Two high end 7000's or an architecture based on them? Now we're talking :smoke:

  8. So basically they reconfirm IGN's rumour about the GPU specs

    What a beast :mickey:

I suppose you might think that if you didn't know how to read.

The IGN rumor said it would be based on AMD's 6000 series. This rumors states it will be based on AMD's 7000 series.

The card mentioned by IGN is identical to the 7000 series GPU mentioned for PS3. And the fact that rumours for both systems are circulating that they are using dual GPU solutions makes it seem pretty evident that ATI is likely proposing the same or very similar GPUs for both next gen systems.

No you need to learn to read.

Not all AMD 6000 and AMD 7000 are the same. Not even close.
