I thought it looked great. What I really liked was the swift transition between random encounter to battle screen. Hopefully that stays in the game, because making these smaller fights flow quickly and cleanly is a big deal to me. Some of the DS and 3DS games really slowed down battles, which sucks when you've got hundreds of pokemon who need to win hundreds of battles to level up.

GaaS is a future, not the future. Honestly, all of the AAA publishers chasing GaaS is the best thing that could happen to indie and mid-level publishers. They're retreating up market, and ceding the lower markets to the competition. This type of action is how something like Octopath Traveller, or Stardew Valley, or Hollow Knight thrives. Those successes will allow lower-tiered publishers to begin moving up market into games akin to what we got in the PS1/N64 era. It's not like Phil Spencer said that MS wants Game Pass on every device or anything.

Game Freak isn't talented enough to make something like Zelda or Xenoblade. There's been no indication that Nintendo is having Monolith help them build out their world, either. My guess is we'll see something that looks visuall similar to Town, which would be perfect in style for pokemon, but I wouldn't expect an open world on Monolith's level.
