lol including new switch games. the switch was mostly wiiu ports its first several years. now, it's a much better system. y'all overrated the system's first couple of years.

it's not the switches fault that Wii U was dead after 3 years. maybe if it had better games in the first 3 years that wouldn't have been the case :reg:

    SNES > Switch > Gamecube > N64 > NES >>>> Wii U >>>>>> Wii. The Wii is a stain on Nintendo's history.

most of the early switch games were wiiu ports. in terms of first several years on the market, the wiiu had more real and better exclusives.

Well, several years is basically Wii U's entire lifespan. Also seems a little arbitrary to talk about the first several years only. The entire Wii U lifespan was basically -  3D World. Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2, SMM, MK8, Pikmin, Tropical Freeze, Splatoon, BOTW? That's all I can really think of.

Switch got all those and then some - TOTK, Bowser's Fury, Odyssey, Smash Bros Ultimate, Animal Crossing, Splatoon 2, SMM2, Fire Emblem:3H, TOTK, Luigi's Mansion 3, Pikmin 4, Mario + Rabbids, SMTV, Bayonetta 3, Tetris 99, Metroid Dread, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Link's Awakening,

Also, I know we're obsessed with exclusives on System Wars, but third party support IS important and while Switch isn't a multiplat machine by any means, it does have some pretty key support from third parties which elevate it as a platform especially when factoring in the portability - Hollow Knight, Celeste, Dead Cells, Hades, Undertale, Steamworld games, DQXI, etc.

All that said, Switch obviously benefited from the commercial failure of the Wii U and it bought Nintendo some time/allowed them to fill in some software gaps along the way. If Wii U sells a little better, who knows where we end up - maybe BOTW stays as a Wii U exclusive, Switch comes out a year or two later with only Odyssey and has a pretty middling life. Never know. I think the way it did play out, Switch is in the absolute top tier of Nintendo consoles with Wii/Wii U both in the bottom tier.

    Why not Morrowind?

Probably a lot easier and profitable to make Oblivion.

Oblivion was when the series went mainstream, huge launch(?) title for the 360. More importantly, while it's not as dumbed down as Skyrim, it has a lot of the same modern conveniences and is significantly streamlined compared to Morrowind. They can update the graphics/engine and mostly leave the systems alone and have it play fine for a modern audience.

Morrowind I think would be a tough one for them to pull off - it never had that mainstream appeal so you have to hope it catches on. For them to do that, you probably have to dumb the systems down quite a bit and likely piss off the people who actually liked the game in the first place. And probably make the game quite a bit worse, honestly.

The interesting thing here is that Skyblivion is probably set to launch around the same time....

  4. I don't force it but as long as there's games I'm interested in I'll play them, I'm a bit more particular these days but there's still plenty out there that appeals to me - way more than I have time for. I definitely go through periods where I play more or less - covid was certainly an uptick in gaming. I've diversified my hobbies as I got older but a lot of them are seasonal or prohibitively expensive/time consuming and just not realistic to do every day. Gaming is a really low cost/effort hobby in the grand scheme of things and if I just have a couple hours (or even 20-30 minutes) to kill at the end of a day it's usually between that or some guitar, super practical in that sense. My girl also loves to read so it works well there.

I do expect the medium to largely move on within my lifetime, especially when you look at kids these days and their tastes. I think eventually it just won't make sense for most devs to invest in controller/M+K based games, at least as the norm. Hopefully I'm wrong, who knows - we're 40 years into it at this point and it's managed to stick. I'll probably keep revisiting the classics even if that does happen though, no different than how older generations go back to their entertainment staples - my dad still regularly throws on movies from when he was young.

Jesus!   And that was before I bought a 15k Rolex and a 110k  Land Rover

15k rolex? ain't that kinda like buying the lowest end BMW on the lot?

110k land rover sounds like a waste.

  6. yep it's a 4-5/10 game.

and the new patch makes it worse, somehow lol. one month in and the best they can come up is "we nerfed cooldown reduction because too many people were using it" - maybe cause the cooldowns are too long and the game is an absolute bore to play as a result.

blizzard lacks any real game/systems design skills these days.

Did you play Spiritfarer? Thats my main frame of reference for management games. But there's still almost nothing out there quite like it.

never did unfortunately so not a good reference point for me.

that said, it is kind of split between management and more "action". the management portion happens in your sushi restaurant at night where you're setting a menu, managing hiring, setup, and serving. the "action" portion happens during the day where you get two chances to dive (morning and afternoon), during which you can prioritize a number of different activities. You're limited by the amount of oxygen your tank can hold, how deep your suit can go, and how much you can carry back to the surface - all of which you upgrade using the money you make off the restaurant. Obviously you're catching fish - which you use to set the menu for your sushi shop, but you're also finding a lot of artifacts and materials under water. You also get a number of quests to do such as investigating an underwater ancient colony. I'm not super far in but it seems like it gets pretty wild in terms of what you're exploring.

  8. Finished FFXVi the other day - honestly the highest compliment I can give it is that I finished, for a (mostly) linear 3rd person action experience of that length that's a rarity and more than I can say for games like GoW:R, TLOU2, etc. Overall I thought it was great with combat, visuals and music being a stand out. Maybe the best audiovisual experience in gaming, atm. Was thinking about doing NG+ but a lot in the backlog as it is so hard to dedicate the time. That said if they do DLC I'll be there. Currently in my top 5-10 for the year.

With that out of the way I'm back to a bunch of TOTK! I put it down for a bit after ~60 hours to get through FFXVI and the initial rush of D4 (should have just kept playing TOTK honestly - D4 is undercooked in so many ways and they've really gone off the rails in terms of end game progression loop and itemization. Wouldn't expect much more from modern blizzard but certainly a let down regardless), I love how easy it is to just jump back in the world - I'm done the four dungeons and ~80 shrines but hopping back in I immediately felt like I never stopped playing. Cleaning up a bunch of sidequest type stuff and just heading towards anything that seems interesting. Probably won't progress the main quest for a little bit still. Also finally put some good time into the underground chasing down those yiga fuckers. Found a couple new shrines too by way of the lightroots. Game continues to just fascinate me, I'll probably be chipping away at this for the rest of the year.

Played through the Pikmin 4 demo. Pretty solid, think Nintendo's got another banger on their hands. I've got a spare voucher so I'll probably use it on this.

Lastly, going through Dave the Diver. Reallllly good indie game, with a quick and awesome loop. There characters and cutscenes are amazing too. Would recommend anyone here who's into management style sims to check it out.

  9. Think I’m nearing the end here. Really enjoyed my time with it. Loses a bit of steam in the middle and they throw in a few too many filler quests but otherwise the moments kept one upping each other throughout. The combat is also just so satisfying.

definitely missing some RPG staples so I can see why die hard FF fans would be displeased but at face value it’s an excellent game.

  10. Really enjoying the game, it just continues to pick up steam as it goes on. I think I'm about halfway? Maybe a little less.

    Spoiler

just past the ifrit vs. ifrit fight.

Every environment is more impressive than the last, the soundtrack is great, im really having fun with the battle system, it's shallow as shit but it's just fun to zone out to and watch the spectacle.
