  1. Beat Hollow Knight finally. Clocked in at 25 hours and finished with 74%. I'll probably go back at some point (I think there's one more DLC coming, so probably then) and do some more cleaning up.

Game was excellent throughout. I can't think of a much better way to blend Metroidvania and Souls tbh. Solid difficulty level, incredibly designed world, top tier art and soundtrack, etc. Charm system is fantastic too, it was really fun experimenting to find what combo worked best for bosses, even though I missed like half the charms.

My one gripe is that there was a few too many hours spent just...wandering around. Obviously it's a Metroidvania so there's going to be points in time where you don't exactly know where to go, but my issue with it was the sheer size of the map. It's huge, which is a positive most of the time, but when you're trying to figure out where to go next there's a lot of ground to cover. I'd have liked to see some more stag stations or tram stations here and there cause there's some particular areas that are a pain in the ass to get to and from and when you have to check them for where to go next (only to find out that that's not where to go next) it's a good waste of 20 minutes. Those 20 minutes add up fast.

Either way, minor gripe all things considered. Definitely a top 3 Metroidvania for me. Easily the best this gen (would have been Axiom Verge before).

once you get into the story, you won't want to stop playing. also, some of the side missions are a lot of fun.

Yeah. It'll get its hooks in you.

I've been contemplating starting another run soon. It's just so daunting. Something I wanna do though.

Honestly,  if you really hate the combat just lower the difficulty, you can get pretty OP quickly and just breeze through the encounters while getting to absorb the story.

  3. Still chipping away at Hollow Knight but haven't had much time lately :(.

Finished the waterways, at Crystal Peak now. I feel like I am missing some upgrades...still haven't got a full one of those mask upgrades (that increase your defense I believe), still at 2 pieces. Also have only been able to upgrade my nail once.

What charms have you guys been rolling with...still only got the capacity for 4 total points here

I've never finished a MH game before, this will probably be my first at this rate. How far are you in the game?

Before I took a break from it I had just beat Zorah Magdaros. Now I'm back to hunting the old monsters but the more powerful versions that show up in different zones.

For some reason I thought beating Zorah was the end of the main quest but apparently it wasn't.

And yeah, it'll probably be the first one I finish too...though I don't really know what constitutes "finishing" a MH game.

The GOTY edition is $30 CAD, I need to get on that shit asap.

But MHW is taking all my free time. Addictive as fuck too.  :scared:

Yeah, I couldn't believe how much I ended up liking MHW tbh.

I'm kinda getting back into it, I find it's a pretty good game to jump into for short bursts to break up longer story driven games.

  6. Man I forgot how amazing Horizon was. The world they've built is damn incredible, even on a base PS4.

Kinda pissed at myself that I stopped halfway through because I forgot quite a bit of the story details...it's kinda coming back though. I'm nearing the end of the main story now I think. Just uncovered what Zero Dawn was all about and now I'm headed back to Aloy's home cause sounds like buddy went and fucked it up.

I'm pretty hyped to jump into Frozen Wilds. Love a good snow environment and this game does that great...and entire DLC focused on that sounds great to me.

Got a decent amount of side content left to do too, I've only really been focusing on story missions for the last half of the game. Any of the content that's specifically worth doing? Cauldrons? Hunting Club?

I might just do a NG+ run at some point. This is probably in my top 5 for the gen.

  7. Finished up Dark Souls Remastered. Such a godly game .

Got a bit ADD after that. Went back and forth about whether to start Yakuza or RE7. Decided on neither.

Jumped back into MHW and picked up where I left off, just after the main story ended, hunting a Pukei Pukei in the first area. Was kinda hard to go back to after Dark Souls, controls took some adjustment. I think I'll keep this one in the rotation, it's a decent game to kill 45-60 minutes with and make some progress.

Played a bit of Rocket League cause it had been a while. I suck at this game.

Finished my 3 hour limit for the Octopath Traveler demo. It's good for what it is, still on the fence though.

Downloaded Hollow Knight for Switch. Only played an hourish but I'm loving it already. The animation and atmosphere is really top tier.

Then I finally landed on finishing up Horizon. I should never have put that one down. Spent a couple hours mostly just getting used to it again and figuring out what the hell I should even be doing, but I think I'm about 2/3rds done the main quest now. For those of you that did Frozen Wilds, should I beat the game completely first?

funny enough, that's what i've been doing. i've done about 15 shrines, so far. i've barely done any of the campaign. i just love the traversal/exploration aspect a lot. i can't say i'm a fan of the combat.

Yeah. The campaign is probably the least interesting part of the game lol. Didn't even finish it myself. Combat you're either gonna love or hate, I did enjoy experimenting with the physics and seeing what you can do to kill stuff, but the straight up sword combat isn't the most fun. It does get better, I think, when you're facing more well equipped enemies. Farming items for the higher level armor sets had some enjoyable fights.

You should also make sure to do:

ok, i'm finally giving zelda botw a fair chance. my boy hooked me up with the switch version, and said i should at least put in 20 hours. i can do that.  i'm not expecting another OOT, so i think i have the right expectations. if at the 20 hour mark, i'm not sold...then it's not for me. i'm curious as to whether or not i'll like it.

I think 20 hours is a good amount.

I was probably "hooked" around the 8 hour mark. Once I got a little ways into the second region.

It's a game I still need to go back to and finish though. Stopped after probably 50-60 hours, just got burnt out. Just really daunting to go back to though, there's so much to keep track of in the world.

I'd say to just explore how you want to, dont use any guides or feel pressured to do stuff in a specific order. If something in the distance catches your eye, just go check it out. There's really no penalty for doing so. Make sure you utilize the map markers though, it's one of the better ways to not get too lost. If you find a good weapon, mark that on a map...it'll respawn every time there's a bloodmoon.

  10. Almost done with Dark Souls. Just got the last half of the DLC left. Sometimes I forget how amazing of a game it is. Even the worst areas in the game are generally quality. The only exceptions are probably Lost Izalith and Demon Ruins. Top 5 of all time for me.

Been chipping away at the Octopath Traveller demo which has a 3 hour limit. Pretty close to that limit now, finished the thiefs intro and then went and recruited the alchemist. Think I can squeeze in most of a 3rd character before I'm done. Kinda on the fence of whether or not I'll grab it. A bit too long for my tastes, but it is suited pretty well to the handheld so I can see myself getting through it over time. The artstyle and music are great, gameplay is super traditional so far though, not necessarily a bad thing. I just remember how burnt out I got by the halfway point of Bravely Default and can imagine the same happening here. Might be better to just pass on it and get through some of my backlog. I've got Yakuza 0, RE7 and Hollow Knight all ready to start. Also have to go back to MHW at some point since I didn't really "finish" it.

  11. Up to World 3 in Tropical Freeze. Game is much better than I expected...I thought Returns was just okay. The levels in this are incredible, I loved the Sawmill one in particular. The great part is they all feel completely unique, having a "gimmick" that in most cases is very well executed.

From a platforming/design standpoint, it might be the best 2d platformer I've played.

With all that said...it's still lacking a certain atmosphere that the original trilogy (specifically 2) achieved. It just feels too...happy? The enemies kinda suck, they remind me of some new age disney animals. If Retro created a game with Kremlings as a base, it could be incredible. I think of what they did with Metroid Prime, where they captured the atmosphere of Super Metroid while bringing the game into 3d.

My only other complaint would be the sidekicks. It's kinda cool how there's three, but they're all pretty lame. I hate that you can't actually play as them. Dixie and Diddy basically just give you two extra hearts and make you jump kinda like Yoshi in SMW2. Cranky is kinda cool, but even then. I get that Dixie basically broke DKC2 from a balance perspective, but I feel like they could have done a better job here.

Also could be a bit more difficult. People told me this was hard.

If you enjoy some souls-esque style boss fights then the Valkyrie fights offer that, however they will require some grinding to gear up if you wish to beat them all. Most of the side content is more advanced combat scenarios, if that doesn't interest you then just trade it in.

Hmm. Yeah, probably a pass then. I enjoyed the combat for what it was but don't think I'd go seeking more out.

Plus, got my Souls fix coming next week. Think I'll trade it in and grab Tropical Freeze since I never played the Wii U version. That should last me till DS.

  13. Got to put a bit more time into GoW last night....I feel like I've probably put like 10 hours in but I don't think I'm too far. Been doing a lot of side stuff. I feel like I've outgeared/leveled the main story stuff i'm currently at, just wrecking stuff now.

anyone got an idea how far through i am?

just got to the (false) top of the mountain, and now im bringing dickheads head to the witch

Apparently the PS4 attach ratios are noticecably higher than the XBone. PS4 owners buy more games per platform.

    Casual lembroys :reg:

Though I wouldnt be surprised if many people just abandoned their XBoxes and lost interest in them, and switched to another platform.

I mean...that's probably because PS4 just has way more good games than Xbox.

But yeah Xbox seems to be the casual platform. The only people I know who game primarily on Xbox are people who had a 360 and played COD and just assumed the new xbox would be good lol.
