Meh it’s the same with every medium. As time goes things start to evolve and lines get blurred in a million ways. Like with music. What started off as rock music now has a thousand different variations. Grunge rock, punk rock, hard rock, butt rock. At the end of the day, it’s all still fucking rock music. Otherwise anything that isn’t the Beatles is no longer rock music

What a bunch of nonsense. Jrpg isn’t even a real genre neither is wrpg. Otherwise games that arent an isometric point and click dungeon crawler with pre rendered backgrounds aren’t wrpgs. Fallout 4? That’s a fps not an rpg. Witcher 3? That’s an action adventure game. Mass effect? 3rd person shooter Squsre has been making plenty of games that don’t adhere to any basic conventions that are what people who don’t know what they’re talking about think is what makes a jrpg since the 80s and even early 90s with Final Fantasy Legend or Romancing Saga, Saga frontier, and they all predate games

I have to say the human boss battles are more fun than the ones with mechs. The one with Reno was more fun than the one before it which was kinda annoying.

That’s right. Totally forgot about that. Ive made it up chapter 6 and it keeps getting better and better: it started off kinda slow but it picks up after you leave the slums. The dynamic between all the avalanche characters is way better than the original. If there’s one negative is I’m getting sick of is the trope in games of all these hot chicks throwing themselves at the main character and he couldn’t be more uninterested. damn you guys are fast. I’m still only at the slums at the beginning. I didn’t have time to play over the weekend due to family crap but now I can spend all day on it. The updated music is pretty sick. I didn’t know the new composer was Hamauzu. He made the music for xiii which was the best thing about that game

RE4 was and I think still has been the most universally loved game I’ve ever seen on sw both here and gamespot after it came out. No one hated it or was not playing it. I remember everyone here on sw. com GD, Javier, and several others would share tips on certain sections. I think I’ve only ever seen that again with dark souls 1. Fun times

Pretty much but you’d be surprised how stupid some people are and start making some arbitrary rules on what it has to check off to be a w or a jrpg — rules that fall apart and literally don’t apply to 80 percent of modern rpgs on either side.

Back in 2011 Dark Souls and Skyrim came out and there were endless debates about both and people picking and choosing sides until it turned into wrpgs vs jrpgs. It happened mostly on places like NeoGaf and even here. Durrrr dark souls is a wrpg not a jrpg stoopid! Iirc Adrian Weiner even weighed in saying dark souls was a wrpg. Slightly off topic but it’s always a pet peeve of mine when people get this wrong and say games like Dark Souls or Nier aren’t jrpgs. Or worse that souls games are somehow wrpgs instead of jrpgs. Basically wrpgs can be something like Fallout 4, the Witcher 3, Divinity original sin, cyberpunk etc. But these same people who have no idea what they’re talking about think a jrpg has to be generic animu turn based crap or else it’s not a jrpg. The monikers wrpg/jrpg simply make no sense and are obsolete because simply telling me it’s a wrpg can be something like Wasteland 2 or Skyrim. O

We clearly play games for different reasons. It’s not really about being hardcore, I just like to be challenged and that’s where I derive my enjoyment. If not I’d rather just be watching a movie. But then i also grew up playing arcade style nes games where they’re only an hour long, but they’re intentionally made difficult to get your moneys worth

I never finished it. What I like and imo saves Dragon quest is it’s more difficult than your average jrpg. kingdom hearts 3 though was a train wreck. I literally stopped using those finishers because of how long they were and how many times I would see them over and over in combat. I can’t remember a gane where I had to limit myself and my abilities just to get some form of challenge

Yeah because not only is the increased challenge more fun, they’re also very different on harder difficulties. Enemies and bosses have different attacks, smarter ai. Feels like playing a new game

Meh I disagree. Most jrpg stories are crap. I play them for their gameplay. Lots of jrpgs have incredible gameplay. If you only play Tales or Dragon quest i can see why someone would not have much expectations for the gameplay of jrpgs
