The reason Xbox is making such radical changes

Recommended Posts

So with Phil Spencer getting his promotion to Executive Vice President of Gaming I didn't realize the previous chain of command and it's quite clear now why Xbox has been stuck in a rut for the past few years and is beginning to rectify its missteps. For those unaware when Phil Spencer took over as the head of the Xbox he had to report directly to Terry Myerson, Myerson was the Executive VP of the Windows and Devices Group at the time which had Xbox jumbled in as a tack on sub-division. This division accounted for Surface, Windows phone, Hololens, Windows itself, Xbox etc. Well everything that happened with Xbox had to pass through and get approved by him, he wasn't entirely interested in gaming, it was something on the back burner for him and he left Spencer with a rather anemic budget.

This explains a lot about the past couple of years, the low investment, the lack of new announcements, cancellations etc. The actual difference now is that Xbox is its own singular and bonafide division within Microsoft, it's not a sub-division and now has Phil Spencer at the head of the division as the Executive Vice President. He is essentially in Terry Myerson's position as an executive at the head table with his own self-contained division. So with that said he only reports to Satya Nadella and it's quite clear with the drastic changes and acquisitions being made that a lot of what Spencer wanted to do and the money requests needed for Xbox were not making their way through Myerson to Nadella, he was being cock blocked by someone not interested in gaming.

The business dynamics of all of this are quite interesting, it's sad that this didn't take place a few years sooner. So when people said that Xbox was being handled by non-gamers and simply by suits, it was accurate, at least at the top end. It does seem like this generation is about a wrap but with what seems like a massive budget now and the ability to make key decisions, it will be awesome to see where Spencer takes all of this now that he's actually in control.

Its an interesting strategy. But I doubt it requires so much analysis...........probably because it isn't analysis, but rather one long post of excuses.

Myerson is gone, Phil Spencer is granted the same level of VP control as Myerson, Xbox becomes a sole division and immediately after he buys five development studios, forms a sixth with a possible seventh acquisition coming from Obsidian.

These are not excuses, they are pretty clear cut reasons as to why things were playing out as they were. He was being blocked, Xbox was being blocked.

And you've spent the past few years defending all of their stupid, terrible decisions. What's your excuse?

Myerson was a fuckwad.  I remember reading way back on Windows Central that he was often against the gaming side and personally blocked many of the initiatives that the Xbox division tried to push through.  He also inhibited the growth of, and new ideas for Windows in many ways.  I'm glad that fuck is gone. :glad:

See I never knew he was why all of this stuff stagnated, I just figured Phil wasn't doing much; I didn't realize he wanted to but was incapable of doing anything.
