Jason Schreier (Kotaku Splitscreen) : "Sony will have PS5 only titles at launch"

Recommended Posts

Around 29:04.
I thought this was relevant now with MS outing their different approach.

More tidbits:
+Jason wants to do (later) raport on PS5 line up
+most third party stuff should be cross gen (AssCreed etc)
+MS is going for "titles on as many devices as possible" approach

They're also the same people that were ragging on MS releasing a new Xbox One X console and saying that MS would be forcing them to buy yet ANOTHER $500 in the very near future... and now we have MS c

Finally this bullshit will go away.

I don't know, bro. Publishers have been skimping lately. Unfishined games have become a common thing, knowing they can pash the problems away. I can't trust these fools to do all you just wrote.

So, let's just back up for a second here.

Just so we're clear..............there were people on THIS forum actually going around and saying OUT LOUD......that Sony wasn't going to have exclusive first and second party games for the PS5 during its launch?

Did that actually happen?

It's funny cause this is such a non story because duh Sony was going to have next gen exclusive titles, just like always. But the fact MS has come out early and announced stuff which is different now makes Sony seem like they are do something good. Very similar to MS last gen announcing all the DRM and online stuff then Sony basically being 'we just do what we always did'. The question this time is do gamers like exclusives. I'm still gonna assume it's yes. It's why I buy consoles, my fav games of the year are nearly always an exclusive title and they are usually the best games on their respective systems.

We'll have to see how much MS "differentiates" their Series X versions of games to their Xbox One versions.

It's matters to you (you're a PC guy so obvs resolution, fps and so on maters) and a small niche of gamers but for the general public it really won't. Can you play the game or not on your system. That's what the majority cares about. That's why systems like the Pro and X are small percentage of total sell through. They cater to an audience but far from a majority.

I should explain.  The lol was in agreement with your comment about it essentially being like last time when Sony really didn't have to do anything but say we're doing more of the same.. where MS tries something different that people might not like.  You have a point there.

With regards to the other comment about the majority.  I agree as well.. but at the end of the day, you're still having to buy a MS product to play their games.  The people who are interested in new consoles and buy them at launch usually ARE those who want FPS and RES and visual increases in their games.  I'm sure XSX will sell out for the first while regardless of whether or not Halo Infinite is also on Xbox One and PC.  For the first year or so, the excitement of a "legitimately" new console will (should) fuel sales.

Like I said... I seems like the people who are talking against this think that Series X versions of games will just be Xbox One games with a res and performance boost again.  I don't think so.  I think MS will put in the effort to visually differentiate the game so that it looks "next gen".. or at least only possible on Series X.  Maybe that wont matter... but it probably will enough to sell out the new console for a while.  By the time MS is ready with Series X only games, then there should be a decent install base.

I'm wondering what differences in game design only possible on next gen are people expecting from Sony with their PS5 exclusives vs let's say a decked out Series X version of new Xbox game?  I'm not trying to argue anything with this question.. just curious as to what some of us might be expecting? :)

I doubt many if any first year next gen games couldn't be scaled down to current gen console .

It's not just that. Most devs will probably make their games with the xone and ps4 in mind, limiting what they can do with next gen game.

Will be interesting if they do somehow make a major difference between series x and last gen devices that aren't pure res or performance boosts. Don't know what they could really do, I think it will just be the same game on max. Basically how The Witcher 3 can now be scaled to everything, even a Switch.

This approach of games on as many systems as possible is great for the consumer but I also geniunely believe (and statistics have backed it up) that exclusive games are on average better than multiplat game. Exclusive games meaning games designed up for a single platform, knowing exactly what the specs are and made to bring the absolute utmost from it. It's why every Sony console has crazy visually impressive games with average hardware. When you start to need to cater for so many difference specs you start to lose that specialisation that exclusives have. I know we live in a scalable world now where everything is same architecture but I still feel there is a limiting effect by having something still need to run on last gen devices, something that will once again make Sony's first party seem a class above. I think that even if PS5 is inferior hardware, their first party will once again be better visually and from a game design perspective because they are going to squeeze every drop out of that hardware by mid to late gen.

Regarding sales, yeah, launch hype will be massive for both. Longevity is where we see divergences.

That's typically always the case first year

first year cross gen games are basically always scaled up lightly for next gen, not scaled down. They would've begun development long before next gen dev kits were available and done so res and performance boosts late on.

Games like COD, new AC and so on have been in dev cycles for years now, they will have next to no next gen improvements other than performance and res.

I think it's possible to create a very different version of "the same game"... consoles used to do this.  Console architectures used to be VERY different even between the same generation.  I'm expecting different higher poly assets with higher res textures, more effects, faster framerates.  Developers who are so inclined can put this effort in.  And MS would be so inclined to push the capabilities of their new console... even with a cross gen game.  Assets specifically will be built for the new console.. I can almost guarantee it.  Even the game design could be altered a bit to take advantage of the new hardware where people on the old systems might have to deal with more loading pauses, and stuff like that.

Yeah which is why launch system exclusive titles is so important. It's the only games designed with next gen hardware exclusively in mind.

I dont really think that's the case either . I doubt there will be any sony title at launch that couldn't also be scaled down to ps4.
