i didn't realize sw.com had a lot of medical experts here. impressive.

The world is burning and no one knew a forum where people spend all day posting "TLHBO" all day and posting pictures of their hikes had all the answers to solve the COVID crisis. What world problem can they solve next?

A vitamin d deficiency does not cause Covid but having enough may prevent you from dying. Why is this so hard to grasp?

Why is correlation != causation so hard to grasp?

I bought Vitamin D supplements back in March because that's when discussions about its potential to help with COVID severity started gaining traction. Deficiency is tied to worse outcomes in almost all upper respiratory infections and you'd need to take an unrealistic amount of it to get into the side effects of having too much, so why wouldn't you supplement vitamin D? I've been on board the vitamin D hype train for months.

I remember Cooke being what I'd call "reasonable" to some degree. Yeah, a bit racist and an attention whore but now he's like some Alex Jones acolyte and shit.

Yes because vitamin d deficiency studies by major universities are "Alex Jones" type shit. Holy fuck dude.

A suggestive set of numbers was published online in April by a medical scientist in the Philippines, Dr Mark Alipio. Of 49 patients with mild symptoms of Covid-19 in three hospitals in southern Asian countries, only two had low levels of vitamin D; of 104 patients with critical or severe symptoms, only four did not have low levels of vitamin D. The more severe the symptoms, the more likely a patient was to be not just low but deficient in the vitamin. Could vitamin D deficiency make the difference between getting very ill or not?

There has long been evidence that a sufficiency of vitamin D protects against viruses, especially respiratory ones, including the common cold. Vitamin D increases the production of antiviral proteins and decreases cytokines, the immune molecules that can cause a “storm” of dangerous inflammation. It has long been suspected that most people’s low vitamin D levels in late winter partly explain the seasonal peaking of flu epidemics, and rising vitamin D levels in spring partly explain their sudden ending. Vitamin D is made by ultraviolet light falling on the skin,

I posted the Irish study as well which confirms this one.

And one out of Illinois. Sufficient levels of vitamin D prevent the cytokine storm which is what is causing severe cases od Covid and deaths.

That's not how that works lol.

Combining COVID-19 patient data and prior work on Vit D and CRP levels, we show that the risk of severe COVID-19 cases among patients with severe Vit D deficiency is 17.3% while the equivalent figure for patients with normal Vit D levels is 14.6% (a reduction of 15.6%).

Every little bit helps as that directly translates to lives saved and a family that doesn't need to mourn a loved one, but that doesn't suggest a cure that will end the pandemic.

This study is a bit more of what you'd be looking for and has corrections for age, illness, etc.:

I didn't mean a cure for the virus, but for the pandemic in so far as a return to normalcy because a sufficient amount of vitamin D would reduce the number of severe cases of COVID for "this bullshit" to end.

What do you think that study is advocating? Because I find it to be pretty consistent with what I've been saying.
