With all this talk about SSDs in the next gen consoles, here's a video to maybe give some of yall an idea of how insane SSD memory technology is

We take for granted how crazy the tech we have is.  Just think of saving a picture, how insignificant of an operation it is... and how many pictures we can save onto an SSD.... and then watch this video.

Spoiler

and then consider that we have SSDs that are 14x faster than the one used in this example..

2 minutes in and realized that IDGAF. I was going to order a couple SDD drives the other day but it's not very cost effective. Can get two 4TB standard portable drives for less than the cost of two 1TB ones.

That's fair.

Luckily consoles exist, or games would never take advantage of ssd.

You're welcome , hermshits :cmpunk1:

Consoles are literally built using PC components these days.

Yep.

They're just really streamlined and efficient PCs at this point.

It's going to be interesting to see what spec of PC NVMe drives will be required for certification from Sony for PS5.  We already know they'll require around 7GB/s+ transfer rates due to some overhead, but I think certified drives will have a new ultra efficient memory controller that hasn't been revealed yet.

On the PC side, I also wonder if DirectStorage will allow direct access from Storage to VRAM?  Sweeney talked about how on PS5 (and although he didn't say it, it applies to Series X too) the memory is close to the CPU and since it's unified, they have direct access from the SSD to VRAM.. whereas on PC the CPU has to take the info from storage to system RAM then to VRAM, so there's added latency doing those operations.  DirectStorage could greatly reduce that latency and require much less resources to do so.
