Why don’t any racing “sims” have realistic damage

Tough to do with shitty Jaguar CPU cores.

Next gen should hopefully be better in that regard.  Plus there is a lot of issues with car manufacturers not wanting their cars to get too beat up.

Not too sure if that’s still the case but I remember this being a big issue with Gran Turusmo series and how manufactures wouldn’t let gane companies have their cars looking wrecked or beat up if they want to use them. It’s why you see this more in arcsde racers that often dont use real cars

They should ditch the brands and make a real racing game w/ real damage

Part of the appeal is driving real cars in racing sims. It would be like playing a sports game with made up teams :ben:

Who cares about the brand name of the car? You can make the model the exact same without the logo.

Devs can't make good looking realistic models of cars without getting the scan data from the manufacturers.  If they tried to build their own cars, they'd look like shit in comparison.

These games aren't destruction derby... most actual people into sims don't give a shit about the cosmetic damage so much as simulated damage, which they can do well enough and will be great next gen.

Something about going 120mph into a concrete wall and having a few scratches seems off to me, idk

Sure... except you already got a reason why SIM games are like that.  You can smash into that same wall... show the scratches, and have the car completely fucked so it doesn't run.  Same end output.  As long as the simulated damage is realistic, that's mostly what SIM enthusiasts care about... because they understand the reality of licensing.  And nobody would play these games if they didn't have real world cars with real world performance data and realistic physics.

You simply don't get that data, if you don't have the license from the manufacturer.

Racing games are unlike other kind of games.

And Project Cars 2 raised standards pretty high.

Good graphics, great sound, decent career mode and great wheel interaction.

The next step would be more photorealistic graphics and inmersion.
