Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is unconscious after being shot by a gunman on Friday while delivering a stump speech in the western city of Nara for the weekend's House of Councillors election, police and firefighters said.

Abe was shot at around 11:30 a.m. from behind by a man wielding what is thought to be a shotgun while he was speaking in front of Kintetsu Railway's Yamato-Saidaiji Station, they said, adding he fell to the ground after two shots were heard.

The 67-year-old, who was also the longtime leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was rushed to hospital.

The assailant, aged 41, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, the police said.

Abe was in the city to support an LDP candidate running in Sunday's upper house election.

It appears to be some sort of handmade, double-barrel shotgun

There are some conflicting reports, or they simply don't to report any new status after the initial reporting, but basically there was a status report that he had no vital signs.

So, as of this current point of time, he is feared dead.
