  • FIREPOWER changed the title to Mike Ybarra: Consoles will never die; Those losing are pushing the narrative that fits them

“Speaking on X earlier today, the former Blizzard Entertainment president discussed Sony's approach to exclusive games, saying that it is the correct strategy to follow if you plan to win in the living room. In this regard, Sony not only knows how to make hits but also how to pick them from others, and it is definitely paying off. If he were Sony, Ybarra continued, he would double down on this strategy because the blood in the water is all over the place.”

sounds like if he was still at xbox they might’ve had half a chance of competing. TLHBFR :hest:

Concord is clearly a hit and Sony knows how to pick them.

Console gaming is in free fall, why do you think Sony is pushing into live service so hard? Because they can't afford not to. Why do you think Sony is pushing into PC so hard? Because they can't afford not to. Why do you think Sony has aspirations to capture the mobile sector? Because they can't afford not to.

They are having to subsidize their console division all over the map because bloated costs and greatly reduced profits have made forward progression with their platform as it stands a fiscal impossibility.

Consoles won't outright die, that's not the conveyance here. They can no longer survive without great outward expansion. PlayStation as a division, PlayStation as a console cannot exist without the above listed realities taking affect.

It's financially untenable, so in other words it's dying.

please tell me whether this statement is accurate:

PlayStation as a division, PlayStation as a console cannot exist without the above listed realities taking affect. It's financially untenable, so in other words it's dying.

The statement presents a viewpoint that suggests console gaming, specifically Sony's PlayStation division, is facing significant financial challenges and is only surviving due to its expansion into live services, PC gaming, and mobile gaming. Let's break down the accuracy of these claims:

1. Console Gaming in "Free Fall":

  • Inaccuracy: The term "free fall" suggests a rapid and uncontrolled decline, which isn't entirely accurate. While the traditional console market faces challenges, such as competition from mobile and cloud gaming and the high costs associated with developing cutting-edge hardware, the console market is not in a state of collapse. Sales of next-generation consoles like the PlayStation 5 have been strong, and demand often exceeds supply due to production limitations.

2. Sony's Push into Live Service, PC, and Mobile:

  • Accuracy with Nuance: It's true that Sony is expanding into live services, PC, and mobile gaming. However, this isn't solely due to financial desperation but also part of a broader strategic shift in the gaming industry. The gaming landscape is changing, with live-service games and cross-platform play becoming increasingly important. Sony's moves reflect an effort to diversify revenue streams and reach new audiences, not just to "subsidize" its console division.

3. Subsidizing the Console Division:

  • Partial Accuracy: Developing and selling consoles can be costly, and historically, console manufacturers have often sold hardware at a loss, recouping costs through software sales and subscriptions. However, the statement exaggerates the situation by suggesting that the PlayStation division is financially untenable without external expansion. Sony's gaming division remains highly profitable, and the PlayStation brand is one of the strongest in the industry. The expansion into other areas is more about growth and adaptation rather than a response to an unsustainable business model.

4. Consoles and "Dying":

  • Inaccuracy: The idea that consoles are "dying" is not supported by current market data. Consoles are evolving, and the gaming industry is expanding beyond traditional hardware. However, consoles remain a significant part of the gaming ecosystem, and companies like Sony and Microsoft continue to invest heavily in their console platforms. The statement's assertion that consoles are dying is overly pessimistic and doesn't align with industry trends.

Conclusion:

The statement overstates the financial challenges facing Sony's PlayStation division and the console market in general. While there are real pressures and an industry-wide shift towards diversified gaming experiences (like live services and cross-platform play), the console market is far from dying. Sony's expansions into live service, PC, and mobile gaming are strategic moves to capitalize on growth opportunities, not desperate measures to keep a failing business model afloat.

PS5 is outselling PS4 launch aligned but yeah it’s falling off. Dynoretard wrong as usual. :omglol:

No it most certainly is not. The PlayStation 4 surpassed 60 million in June of 2017, it wasn't until this month that the PlayStation 5 accomplished that.

Try again retard.

Are you fucking dumb? The US is not planet earth dumbshit. The PlayStation 5 is tracking two months behind the PlayStation 4 in sales globally... It's leading the PS4 in US sales but trailing it in Europe.

Too bad Sony already said making games exclusive to PS isn’t profitable. LOL

World wide launch aligned PS5 is keeping pace with PS4 and Switch despite a chip shortage that impacted PS5 for a year a half.

Launch aligned PS5 59.3 million, PS4 60.1 and Switch 61.4.

PS5 going Switch and PS4 numbers means it's dying :umad:

but then again I can to see why you would think the PS5 is dying because who could forget that jn 2017 you proclaimed the switch will  fall off a cliff and be dead by 2018 :kaz:

We all knew this was the case but it's good to see someone in his position pointing it out.

Its funny how despite just being told it's propaganda, this goes right over the head of Dynaflop who doubles down and tells us "it's true because I read it on the internet".

Consoles will 100% die. Eventually we’ll all be playing on the cloud.

I used to think this, but the total crash and burn of Stadia makes me think it's not happening anytime soon.  People are more willing to tolerate comprised graphics in a mobile device than any variability in connectivity/latency.
