  1. I can see MS going for Numbers 1 and 3. I believe Microsoft will go batshit insane on the hardware side meaning an expensive subsidized console. I have a difficult time imagining Sony not doing the same but it's possible their hand has been forced.

I don't see MS going batshit crazy. It would be insane of them, to have their competitors make day one profit off of hardware and they be the only ones losing money off of every console sold.

  2. Yes, that's right. And you don't. Puerto seems to think it'll only have 4.

4 to 8 and the 8 is if they go with AMD 8 core architecture. If MS sides with IBM, 6 at the most. 16 cores were designed at this point for top of the line super processing servers. Not normal business servers but top of the line high processing servers. MS is not going to put that type of tech into a console.

Next gen is going to be three keys

    1. Powerful tech

    2. Day one profitability

    3. Off the shelf components.

  3. I believe this is what the "OBAN" CPU in the 720 will be based on...

    Each "A2" is a "core"

It's possible they may use less cores in an attempt to improve yields, if they are a problem.

Now you're no longer arguing that th 720 will have 16 cores. 720 could easily get a 4 core cpu based on the A2 architecture which is exactly what the article talks about when it states the 18 core design was too costly.

Ultimately you can forget about consoles getting a cpu designed for super computing servers.

The closest we came to that was the cell qnd you see how that turned out. MS should focus on beastly GPU and RAM. I no longer believe cpu is as important as the other two components.

I even except sony reusing the same exact cell chip to save cost if that would help them go all out on gpu and ram.

Sony should just use a modified PowerXCell 8i and spend most money on GPU and RAM

IBM is no longer making the 8i so it would be too costly for Sony to start up manufacturing.

  5. While they both share the same A2 architecture you're talking about a completely different CPU, even with a different number of cores. And then you're using an article from 2011 to try and convince yourself it would be too expensive years later in 2013 LOL

Too expensive? No. Expensive? Maybe. The 720 is going to be a BEAST afterall :glad:

The CPU is using the A2 architecture and it has 18 cores. If there was any CPU we can go by to assume what 720 might use based on this rumor than this is the CPU.

And yes this article from 2011 has Intel (you know the people who actually are making these CPU) stating it's expensive even in a high margin market.

Even if IBM is able to repurpose the cores of other PowerPC architectures, designing and implementing a custom SoC for a single niche market, albeit a high-margin one, is an expensive proposition.

Intel has spoken and the more I read up on this the more unlikely 720 will have 16 cores. 720 has a better chance of having 12GB of RAM than a 16 core CPU.

  6. Super Computers contain hundreds to thousands of CPU's

A 16 Core CPU in the 720 is completely plausible. It has infact been Reported.

You mean a rumor has been reported. Unless MS recently released a press release?

On top of that more info on the Blue Gene Q processor

Whether the BGQ architecture is the end of the line for the Blue Gene franchise is an open question. As of today, there is no R system on the roadmap and IBM seems to be leaning toward a Power-architecture-only strategy for its custom supercomputing lineup. Even if IBM is able to repurpose the cores of other PowerPC architectures, designing and implementing a custom SoC for a single niche market, albeit a high-margin one, is an expensive proposition.

  7. 16 core setup would be way to expensive. MS would be selling 720 at a huge loss. I can only imagine how much that cpu would cost even with mass manufacturing discount.

So why not share exactly how expensive it will be for MS?

MS is probably not even considering this.

    They obviously are.

And "Oban" is most likely this, or based on it....

    http://en.wikipedia....wiki/PowerPC_A2

There is already a CPU with 16 cores (18 to be exact) based on the PowerPC_A2 and it's installed in a supercompter called Blue Gene Q

The third supercomputer design in the Blue Gene series, Blue Gene/Q aims to reach 20 Petaflops in the 2012 time frame. It continues to expand and enhance the Blue Gene/L and /P architectures.

The Blue Gene/Q Compute chip is an 18 core chip. The 64-bit PowerPC A2 processor cores are 4-way simultaneously multithreaded, and run at 1.6 GHz. Each processor core has a quad SIMD double precision floating point unit. The processor cores are linked by a crossbar switch to a 32 MB eDRAM L2 cache, operating at half core speed. The L2 cache is multi-versioned, supporting transactional memoryand speculative execution, and has hardware support for atomic operations.[28] L2 cache misses are handled by two built-in DDR3 memory controllers running at 1.33 GHz. The chip also integrates logic for chip-to-chip communications in a 5D torus configuration, with 2GB/s chip-to-chip links. 16 Processor cores are used for computing, and a 17th core for operating system assist functions such as interrupts, asynchronous I/O, MPI pacing and RAS. The 18th core is used as a spare in case one of the other cores is permanently damaged, like in manufacturing, but is normally shut down. The Blue Gene/Q chip is manufactured on IBM's copper SOI process at 45 nm, and will deliver 205 GFLOPS at 1.6 GHz and draw 55 watts. It is 19×19 mm large (359.5 mm²) and comprises 1.47 billion transistors. The chip is mounted on a compute card along with 16 GB DDR3 DRAM (i.e., 1 GB for each user processor core).

MS using a 16 core cpu is not going to happen. We can close the book on this one. MS using AMD's 8 core processor is more believable.

  8. Finished up all the FONV DLC packs. Giving Dark Souls another run through. I got Infamous 2, Batman AC, Skyrim, Ass Greed Rev, Dragon Age 2 and Uncharted 3 all here waiting to be played but my TV is messing up (greenish hue) It's an old HDTV model so I'm a call to see if it can still be repaired and if not then time to upgrade. But I don't want to play anything new till then.

  9. Ok bitches this is what I have been playing over the past couple of weeks.

I beat LBP2 single player. Pretty easy game and not very challenging. Looking forward to seeing what the community has done but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I beat Mafia 2 as well. Got it from Gamefly. Not much to say. I remember having more fun with the first one. I also bought Fight Night Champion. I'm a huge boxing fan and enjoyed the game very much. The single player is pretty much a guided experience forcing you into some challenging situations. It still has the regular career mode on top plus online tournaments. I beat the single player and put off the career mode just get to the next game which is.....

The Lost and the Damned. Wow so much better than GTAIV. Still got a bit more to go. I'm switching between that and Dead Space 2. Once I knock both of those games out I got two games that came in from GF, The Force Unleased II and Enslaved. After those I got still ME2, then probably play The Ballad of Gay Tony, Then go back to LBP2/Fight Night Champion. There is also Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat I want to get into.

I just don't have the time to put into gaming right now and it just keeps piling on ;(

some of the online levels for lbp2 are incredible, far superior to what the devs pumped out. one had me playing upside down. i've also encountered some pretty challenging stages. i agree with you that the campaign, while fun, was too easy.

Yeah I;m looking forward to trying out some community levels and try out some co-op.

  10. Lost and Damned and Dead Space 2 are both great games. Lost and Damned has one of my favorite stories of the gen. Only GTA game were I actually cared about the characters.

As for Dead Space 2, that game is in my top 10 of the gen. I loved almost every single minute of it. It has a maybe 1 or 2 poor sections though. The ending is great too. B)

I beat DS2 a couple of days ago. I'm itching to play NG+. The game is great. man they did a great job using 5.1 surround. Constantly fucking around with me think enemies are behind me or to the side and when I turn no one is there. Motherfuckers :rage:

And your right, L&D characters are much better. The biker gang environment is bad ass.

  12. Kenta I'm completely ignorant on military stuff but do you want to get out of the army/marines? Is it like you still have a serve a bit more?

I am getting out. I complete my four years in July. There is another deployment coming up, but I have a wife and a daughter now, and I'm not going to leave them 2 months after my daughter is born. But technically after this July, I can still be recalled back by the Marines within the next four years if say there is a draft. I've done my term honorably and I feel I've contributed enough to the Marine Corps and myself the past four years so I'm good :)

Not so much a draft but if they want to call up the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) which they rarely do now a days.

Isn't there a stop-loss still in effect? if so you're fucked all around the board. They can keep you after your contract expires, fuckers.

    stop loss ended awhile back.
  14. lmao fuckstick is such a hippie.

I actually don't give a fuck how many innocent people get killed what I find annoying is the Holier than thou reverence people have for US soldiers when really all they are people who couldn't go to college unless they were willing to be shot at and if they actually had any other option they never would have enlisted. Then there is the bullshit where they actually convince themselves they are having a positive impact on the world by fighting illegal wars Everyone pretends to respect them when really they are just glad there is someone dumb enough to fight for oil so they don't have to do it themselves.

You're just another generic retard talking shit. You're not even smart enough to realize your just spitting stereotypical bullshit. God forbid there might actually be people out there that actually have joined the service to serve their country. Contrary to your idiotic belief there are people who joined the military after college cause they wanted to serve. There are people who earned their degrees and still remained to fulfill 20 years of service.

The reason why people respect us and not little shits like you is because we took a stance. When people see guys like Kenta or myself they knwo we take action. We chose a side and stick by it whether it be 4 years like Kenta or a career like myself. But people like you, no one know what type a person you are.

Will you simply stand up and take a stance when the time comes or are you just another bitch behind the screen that talks shit all day but when the time comes to walk all that talk, you flake out. 9 times out of 10 is the latter cause it's always the bitches that have the most mouth.

  15. Kenta is out there doing shit and fucking around with big ass cool fucking guns and PoortuCrock is posting at SW 24/7 playing inferior XBOX ports.

You can tell that some people are in it for realness, (KentaGod) and others are in it for a free ride (you, dumpsterblock)

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, used it as a rag and bought a new one, used that a as a rag and got another one.

  16. More FO: NV. Still liking it quite a bit, and there's a lot of depth but I feel like this is descending into the same power fantasy that every single other FO game became. The game started out not so easy but now it's becoming a bit too easy, which fumbles the balance and reason to use a lot of the systems (not to mention the survival atmosphere).

Gonna crank it to Very Hard and see if that helps.

I didn't find the game overly easy on Hard. Have you encountered the harder enemies yet? Like Deathclaws? They can easily kill most lvl.20+ characters with a couple hits on hard.

I encountered the nightkin, which took me a while to nail down a strategy, but after that I got'em. No deathclaws yet, no. I didn't mean it was easy, I just meant that I'd have way more incentive to use gameplay systems like crafting or customization if I needed to really work to overcome enemies or expend more of my supplies. The game just gives you everything you could possibly need. My money issues were permanently solved after Mojave since there's so much junk to pick up and trade. By extension, stimpacks and other meds are no longer a concern. This stuff will have to be tuned via mods I guess.

No, you just need to play hardcore mode.
  17. Alpha Protocol has to be one of the most underrated games of the gen. I love the dynamic storyline. The game is surprisingly long as well. I think people hate it because they go in thinking it's a shooter instead of an rpg.

I'm playing that right now. Came in from gamefly. What's killing the game is the shooting mechanic. They should of at least came up with a system where aim focusing gets faster as your ability improves. It takes way too long to get the aiming reticles together.
