The cost of poor policing.

Quote

New York City taxpayers spent a whopping $230 million to pay off 6,472 lawsuits settled against the NYPD in the last fiscal year, according to an annual report released Monday by Comptroller Scott Stringer’s office.

The amount reflects settlements made from July 2017 through June 2018, and marks a 32% decrease from the prior year, when the city paid out $335 million for lawsuits against the police department.

Roughly $108 million was related to allegations of police misconduct like false arrests and excessive force, more than doubling the $48 million paid out for such issues a decade ago.

The total number of police misconduct claims filed last year increased from 2017, despite the fact that the total number of settlements issued in cases against the department declined.

Stringer’s report noted that a handful of claims inflated the total cost of last year’s settlements — five wrongful conviction cases accounted for roughly 14%, or $33 million, of the NYPD payouts.

Since so many people are concerned with the cost of the damages of riots and property damage, yet care far less for the lives of POC. Financially It's mere pennies on the dollar at best vs the cost of bad policing.

And if the police are defunded its only going to get worse. Less people will want to become police officers, smaller labor pool. And if they are paid less you will get even worse outcomes.

The problem here you are citing is typically an american one. Suing. No country on earth has a culture of suing quite like the US. Multi million dollar lawsuits for a punch in the face or a spilled hot coffee etc.

You really should learn about the hot coffee case before mocking it.

The specifics of a person getting third degree burns because of the coffee you're using as a case of frivolous lawsuits? Who the fuck makes a point and then is like "but let's not go into the specifics." and actually knows what they are talking about or is being honest?

Is so why have you elected rotten Democratic leadship? Isn't the city council all Democrats except for a couple from Staton?

Our previous 2 mayors were Bloomberg and Guliani. NYC as a whole isn't nearly as "liberal" as you are trying to make it sound.

And De Blasio, a far leftist, has been mayor for almost 7 years.

Yes and he's done things like eliminating racial profiling and the cops hate him for voicing for more responsible policing. You can't change culture in 7 years. This point is moot in the big picture anyway but thanks for wasting space in here.

:whoa:We're going to need at least 50 years of Democrat rule before we can even make a dent.
