So the US government does spend more than it receives from taxes. but only a small fraction of that is due to Medicaid/food stamps or other public assistance. 
 

A large portion is spent on retired people, veterans, and other spendings that Republicans of course don’t want to touch be cause these are their constituents (and their own pockets)
