Microsoft announces DirectX 12 Ultimate

Sony engineer. From what I understand geometry engine is their term for mesh shading. So VRS benefits from mesh shading?

Variable Rate Shading is nice for saving cycles, but VRS’ optimization capability doesn’t hold a handle to the Geometry Engine’s capabilities. VRS without GE means you’re still processing vertices you can/should eliminate in earlier stages to begin with. More free compute/memory.

No... what he's saying is that the benefit from using VRS is nothing compared to the benefit of mesh shaders.

Sony supports mesh shaders through it's "geometry engine".. but it's sounding like it might not support VRS.

It almost sounds like he's damage controlling the PS5 not supporting VRS... at least that's how I interpret the tweet.. because he's not responding to anyone.. he's just making a statement... probably as a general response to people asking if PS5 supports VRS.. because nobody knows.

But yes.. for sure mesh shaders are much more important than VRS is.  That's why I was so happy to hear PS5 supports them.. because it will make a huge difference in the amount of geometry and objects next gen games will have.

Ummm... Games first and foremost?

They're basically the same system specb

wise with X having a slight lead in performance.

You would say some dumb shit like this on the back of that god awful reveal.

The Series X raster alone is with the PS5 at peak 18% more powerful, that's at peak boost. The reality is the PS5 is likely to run in the mid 9's in terms of teraflops to manage heat and noise as an average so this fluctuates between 18% to 27% or so. What's next? Well Sony's CPU is weaker, not by a lot when at peak boost but again its highest boost is still short of Microsoft's lowest fixed. So what is the low end then when it's not boosting to peak? 300Mhz slower? 400Mhz?

Oh there's more? Series X has 16 more CU's than the PS5, do you know what this means? It means Series X has 44% more intersection engines tied to shaders which means it has 44% more hardware in the die to accelerate RT.

Basically the same system spec? Nope. Slight lead in performance? Fuckin' nope.
