Remij 4,787 Posted October 11, 2018 Share Posted October 11, 2018 They recreated the iconic moment using GPUs to prove that the lighting from the actual photo was possible... since there were conspiracy theories insisting that it was all a hoax and that the light wouldn't have lit up Buzz Aldrin's suit in that way. The original tech demo released with the GTX 900 series cards. It used voxel based global illumination to simulate the lighting bounce from the sun on surface of the moon, and how it would affect the scene. Here's a pic of the original demo with the actual photo In the demo you could change a slider for the position of the sun as it would have been at that time, and see how it would affect the scene. It wasn't a very flashy demo, but it was pretty demanding because of the global illumination.
