Whatever became of Occulus Rift?

Recommended Posts

Facebook is quickly becoming responsible for killing all momentum regarding VR on the PC.

In case people forgot, Valve released a Half Life VR game a little more than 6 months ago, and it came and went like a small blip on the radar.

Why would FB kill it? Didnt they invest in one of the big VR comapnies?

They actually seem to be buying VR developers, and nothing comes out. Like as if they're mothballing them.

But the thing is that you cannot login and buy or play games on the new Oculus VR headset that they are selling without a mandatory Facebook account.

Reviewers are actively dissuading people from buying it because of that.

And the concern is that it almost seems like Facebook doesn't care about connecting the VR headset to the PC to play high-graphics VR games. They seem content with only developing games with simpler graphics.

The mandatory Facebook account shit and not allowing people to use throwaway accounts is what's killing it.  I'm pretty much ready to drop it completely.

On the headset side, I think they're actually making the right decisions.  A stand alone headset which you can optionally connect to your PC is the right way to go.  I ain't even mad about them wanting to focus on the stand-alone stuff at this point.  As long as they remain compatible with Steam VR, then it's fine.. but it's VERY clear that stand-alone is where it's at for them.  It sells WAY better and you don't need any additional hardware.  Having a hybrid device like that is the best option.

PCVR can and will continue to grow, but only when the headsets get cheap enough and simple enough to set up.  Outward tracking, no need to set up "base stations", no need for cables..  That's when it will be easy enough for the masses.

I went to a 360/VR creator conference a few years ago. It was basically a trade show telling people how influential 360/VR could be. The whole conference was truly about how to monetize 360/VR, mostly in immersive ads and sponsored content. Nothing really to do with creating stand alone games or an actual entertainment products.
