Fucking amazing work by Valve and AMD. I was trashing the Series S in the other thread, but as long as developers have to target it, the Deck is going to be in the sweet spot for AAA support. The Deck is going to have an incredible lifespan. It's easy to see upper-tier indies playing on it for 10+ years.
Nintendo wont catch up to Valve's 2022 performance before 2030.

PS5 is trash and has no good games. And I have one.
High speed SSD and Dualsense alone destroy the competition. PS5 already has several exclusives that put Xbox to shame. I'd still say The Last of Us Pt 2 is the most technically impressive game ever made so we're not even talking about next gen graphics yet.

As a socialist I find ResetEra toxically liberal.

Cows are so delusizonal. They can talk about anything but the ps5
PS5 is the state of the art. Anything to criticize still leaves it far ahead of the competition.

100%. Xbox’s business model now is all about how many subs they can get for Gamepass. Piecemeal enough mediocre content to keep dumb lemshits happy.
It's especially sad because PS5 has a 399 entrypoint which is a steal. Was it really worth anchoring the whole generation for a short term easy entry? They could've just kept making Xbox One X for another year or two.

The S is an early sign that gamepass has shifted MS' publishing goals from cutting edge quality to AA consistency (which they still struggle to achieve). It's the Netflix of videogames in more ways than one.

I know I'm gonna get back into Returnal eventually because I still think about the soundtrack like every day
Ratchet and Clank I only played a little bit but it is one of the most "next gen" things I've seen so far.

We'll see about that. They have a LONG way to go yet.... BUT... you can definitely see the play here. They really have done some black magic fuckery with Proton..
Steam Deck is the perfect vehicle to accelerate SteamOS development. Valve are also experts at crowdsourcing data.. their userbase is incredible at providing that data too. They community is all too eager to help Valve bring this thing to the next level. They're building SteamOS out, and they'll keep working away on compatibility and features over time.. Then if they could convince developers to switch over to Vulkan natively.. and make SteamOS native games... MS could be hurting.
They can then retry the "Steam Box" concept and release their own set top box running SteamOS. This time around the story is different than it was before. They'll have an OS level platform which has thousands and thousands of games supported out of the box... and the best thing about it is anyone can build a Steam Box.. just as you would any other PC.
IF Valve do this right... it could be monumental.
Yeah, I think that's right, but I don't think it's a long way to go. They don't even need truly native linux support, though Vulkan adoption would make a huge difference for compatibility and performance. Since Proton is the special sauce making this whole thing possible, it's more important imo that developers do the bare minimum to test against it, rather than take on the maintenance burden of full Linux support.
Sooner or later, they will release SteamOS as a general purpose installer, and yeah you can build your own box or likely buy a box designed for it. Ignoring the high-end AAA space, there are boxes like this which would be perfectly fine playing hundreds of indie games on Steam in a very slick package:

PC gaming is about to get crazy. The Deck is barely out, and it's already clear Valve has accomplished some sorcery with this thing. Now that AAA easycheat games like Elden Ring and Apex Legends are confirmed working, there is a clear path for SteamOS to stand head to head with Xbox and Playstation in the living room. The same Proton compatibility will also apply to Chromebooks, likely to get a major graphics boost from Intel's new mobile chips. When you buy the Steam version of a game, you're not only getting the best graphics, you're getting portability, cloud streaming, and console, in a permanent library, with features that are constantly improving. You gotta give them props. Valve spent 10+ years building a platform that can take PC gaming beyond Windows, and it's finally coming together.

Phew it's finally sold out. Devastating.

Even with a 1 year delay it's this bad. 343 has been a disaster from jump. Master Chief Collection took years after release to get to a decent condition.

Ok, great to know, because I'm leaning more towards laptop functionality than tablet.
I've got an HP Spectre X360, which is a 13" 2:1 where the screen goes all the way around for a tablet-like position. It makes for a pretty bad ipad, but I do like it when I'm reading a book / big doc or like a kitchen recipe. It also came with a nice pen, but I don't use it. I probably only use the tablet mode like 5% of the time, and it's overwhelmingly just a thin laptop.

I really like the Surface BOOK design with the fully detachable tablet. They're slick, they feel very well built and they're super powerful.
The Pro design with the kickstand really doesn't work for me. I do a lot of half-coding, half-napping with a normal laptop on my chest. The flip out stand just sucks for that, or even basic LAPtop functionality.
I guess if you mostly want a tablet, and only need a laptop occasionally, it could work. But I'd rather have Android/iOS/ChromeOS for that because imo windows blows as a tablet OS.
Also all MS laptops are impossible to service, so you better get that extended warranty.

meanwhile, ps5's are going for $900. insane.
This is nuts. Despite Xbox selling half PlayStation numbers up to this point, I still thought it was a formidable competitor. The system itself is honestly fine imo. But the difference in demand here is undeniable. It looks like we're gonna see a bigger blowout than last generation.

MS is trash, every team working for them is on a downward trajectory
Their flagship franchise, and next-gen system seller is totally fucked right now, and the devs don't deny it. And this is after a painful 1 year delay. Given how many MGS games were cancelled or in dev-hell on Xbox One, you gotta wonder if MS knows how to make games.

I signed up for this Soundiiz thing when I switched from Spotify to YouTube music. If you pay, it'll transfer your playlists. That *mostly* worked ok. But it's the kind of thing you forget to cancel and I ended up paying $3/mo for like a year, having totally forgot about the service.

Funny how every bootlicking gaming outlet/podcast thinks MS is going to fix Activision, and also support unionization efforts.

The game is still untouched production-wise, and the runners up are Naughty Dog games.
PS5 has incredible exclusives like Returnal, Horizon Forbidden West and Ratchet and Clank which MS studios can't get close to. But by Sony standards, there's a next-level tier we haven't seen yet.
