This is the expected release date for most everybody anyway. The only people that were hitting that December date were people who manage to get it within the first 10 seconds. This is a non-issue, it's made even more of a non-issue considering it's a companion to your PC which you can still use.

It’s hardly cutting edge hardware and I can’t see any more powerful rival hardware being released between now and Feb.

 

what are they supposed to do?  Shortages are everywhere. At least this stops a christmas panic and people trying to ebay them for extremely sky high prices

Cutting edge by what standards? It can barely run last gen games at decent settings and framerate. We’re going to start seeing more games dropping last gen altogether soon, so imagine how poorly they will look and run on the deck the further we get into the gen. The thing has no legs and will only be useful for small indie games.
