Games like Metroid Prime?

Recommended Posts

Just beat the remaster a couple of days ago.

Excellent game, my first time playing it.

Now I am looking for something alike, with a lot of exploration, blocked areas accesible with upgrades, a bit of scanning, and good level design and tons of secrets.

You basically have two options, imo:

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is the next best thing. Awesome game. Different, darker setting but it captures similar atmosphere to the first. Not quite as much of a masterpiece but still a very very good game. You can try MP3 as well but it's a step down imo and they made a lot of poor design choices as a result of them trying to implement wiimote controls.

Returnal is the other one I'd recommend. Obviously it's a roguelite so it's structurally quite different. That said, I think it nails the atmosphere in a similar way to Metroid Prime and it does have some elements of the exploration/paths blocked for upgrades.

Otherwise? Not much unfortunately. It's a pretty unique game in terms of being a First Person Metroidvania. My hope is that one day indies might start tackling that genre like they have with the 2D Metroidvanias, there's so much potential there and it's a shame the genre hasn't been explored more.

METROID PRIME 2 AND 3.

Rumors are that they will also get basic remasters on Switch (not on the level of part 1).... Not sure of release time frame.

And Rumors also say that Prime 4 is supposed to be this holiday.

In the meantime you can play Metroid Dread on Switch or Metroid Fusion if you have a Switch subscription.

How good is Dread?

Dread is fantastic.

I think it lacks a little bit on atmosphere compared to something like Prime - the areas aren't quite as distinct and it also doesn't have as memorable music (which to me plays a huge part in Prime's overall atmosphere package).

Gameplay wise it's nearly perfect. The exploration is also top tier - though it is a bit more linear on the surface, not nearly as much backtracking and such (though imo this is only something that you really notice if you start examining the world design).

Hollow Knight is a bit better imo, but it's a long one - especially with all the DLC. Dread is probably half the length of Prime depending on how much you're collecting in each game.

After work went out looking for it at my nearest store, seeing as it is $60 on the eShop.

Couldn't find it, so I walked out with this instead.
