Red Dead redemption 2 become the second biggest retail launch of the year in UK, 27% of GTAV launch

Recommended Posts

UK retail sales figures are out for Red Dead Redemption 2 and while the title has sold very well indeed, it has failed to top FIFA 19, which remains the biggest week one release of the year.

Second place is highly respectable of course, but with huge development costs, the game will need to successfully monetise its online service in order to be considered a success – by Rockstar standards at least.

The title was never going to have the same draw as the company’s biggest franchise. And the games market is a very different place to 2013 when GTA V was released. But week one sales of 27 per cent of the biggest game launch of all-time is nothing to be sniffed at.

We await a report on digital sales from Rockstar or parent Take-Two.

Another way to look at the game is that RDR 2 claimed just over 60 per cent of the retail market this week, so the idea that no one was buying anything else this weekend is rather put to rest. Compare that to an incredible 89 per cent market share for GTA V on its launch week and you get an idea of how big it was out-of-the-blocks.

More recent comparisons of 75 per cent for FIFA 19 and just 44 per cent for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 show RDR 2 is doing well, though not outstandingly so, in dominating public consciousness at launch.

There are two markets that the XBox does well, US and UK. The worldwide split is going to be something like 6:1 in favour of Playstation.

Ugh no... Almost no games ever released have reflected a fucked off ratio like that unless it's some Japanese thing and even then 6:1 is a bit extravagant. Most games bear out the install base ratio.

Also wait for NPD, isn't that Red Dead Xbox promo US only?

Thats not how it works, base size helps sales without a doubt, but when you're approaching 100 million the userbase is very varied. Some segments of the userbase, just have zero interest in RDR2. Some people bought the PS4 just for Fifa, some bought it for Nier, some bought it for Horizon, some bought it for VR etc.

You can't interpolate sales for a game by userbase size, thats nonsense because the vast majority of a userbase does not have interest in any games, this goes for any game.

Yet things like GTA scale properly, CoD scales properly, Battlefield scales properly etc. Most big releases do, 6:1 is just a dumb assertion, not even remotely within the confines of operational reality.

No it doesn't scale properly. Tekken and Soul Calibur outsold the XBox version 4:1, while the DBZ fighting game sold more on XBox at least the first month.

Look what you just did, you ran to three Japanese titles. We all know Japanese results are all over the place on Xbox.

Expecting a 6:1 ratio for Red Dead or anything even remotely close to that is pure psychosis. I can understand people posting these UK things but the UK is such a drop in the bucket relative to the whole that it's nigh worthless information.

It's the XBox's second strongest market. It's not a "drop in the water". It worse everywhere else than the UK.

Elsewhere, Forza Horizon 4 rose up a place to No.4 with a 50% sales improvement week-on-week. This was driven by Xbox One retail bundles that also included a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2.

It was smart for MS to take a hit on system price with Red Dead, it should be a pretty interesting NPD for both software and hardware.
