Purist 134 Posted November 28, 2019 Share Posted November 28, 2019 Quote The strategy of putting high-end games on Playstation proved to be a damaging one in Japan : Number of 500k+ sellers at retail on PS3 : 21 Number of 500k+ sellers at retail on PS4 : 6 Especially for JP games (19--> 4) Quote +-------+------------+------------+------------+------------+------------+-------------+ |System | This Week | Last Week | Last Year | YTD | Last YTD | LTD | +-------+------------+------------+------------+------------+------------+-------------+ | NSW # | 179.992 | 180.136 | 113.341 | 3.356.261 | 2.323.645 | 10.245.807 | | PS4 # | 7.073 | 8.094 | 29.283 | 946.248 | 1.375.108 | 8.498.338 | | 3DS # | 1.073 | 1.262 | 8.302 | 175.464 | 490.261 | 24.480.428 | | XB1 # | 110 | 80 | 684 | 5.979 | 13.631 | 108.910 | | PSV # | 23 | 20 | 1.819 | 37.455 | 169.032 | 5.862.809 | 7K PS4 vs 180K Switch sales in a week, same for last week 8K PS4 vs 180K Switch, PS4 is not even 5% of Switch sales. Things are looking grimmer by the minute for PlayStation in Japan. Nintendo has been the single dominant force there with no change in sight. Do you think this will start affecting Japanese support for PS5? Link to post Share on other sites
James Skywalker 528 Posted November 28, 2019 Share Posted November 28, 2019 So Switch is Ford and PS4 is Ferrari. Link to post Share on other sites

lynux3 2,487 Posted November 28, 2019 Share Posted November 28, 2019 (edited) Has it affected PS4 Japanese support? Nope. Consoles haven't sold good in Japan since PS2 era. Edited November 28, 2019 by lynux3 Link to post Share on other sites

For publishers that do not sell huge in the West like Falcom/Atlus, it makes more sense to jump to Nintendo. Even if you look to the West, the Switch sold faster than PS4 in NA and is gaining momentum in Europe and other parts of Asia. For e.g. the top 5 software sales in Korea last week are all Nintendo titles. I still think Switch can surpass PS4's LTD when all is said and done. Not that it matters much though since next gen is well underway by then. Quote South Korea Sales November 11 - November 17: 01./00. [NSW] Pokemon Sword / Shield (Pokemon Co.) {2019.11.15} 02./02. Nintendo's console will always be a Nintendo games machine and no, it won't be surpassing PS4's LTD, but it might outsell Wii or get close. Quad Damage 1,984 Posted November 28, 2019 Share Posted November 28, 2019 (edited) PS3 LTD 8.221.203 PS4 LTD 8.498.338 well lets see, it outsold ps3. did ps4 lose support coming off that? no, it actually GAINED support getting ff7 remake, dragon quest, monster hunter, street fighter, team ninja exclusives, another from software exclusive and another kojima exclusive,... Not denying that PS4 had great Japanese support with the help of strong performance in the ROTW. But still with a 95% marketshare in Japan along with strong performance in the West, I'd not be surprise to see publishers bet on the safer Switch, especially if next gen game dev budget continue to increase. madmaltese★ 2,823 Posted November 28, 2019 Share Posted November 28, 2019 Sony fully embraced a worldwide view quite a while ago. Fully solidifying that by uniting under the SIE banner recently. Been a smart move too, why worry about performance of Japan only when they smashed world wide records. PS4 has given them the fastest selling exclusives 3 times in a row, including the fastest selling new IPs ever too. Their IP power is stronger than it has ever been too while PS4 is now the second highest selling console of all time. Japanese devs that have followed suit have also found gigantic success, none more than Capcom. Decided to shift MH from a franchised focused on Japan and Handhelds and made it a WW thing and it's their highest selling game of all time. Link to post Share on other sites

Guest Posted November 28, 2019 Share Posted November 28, 2019 I mean, Japan is just more interested in a handheld gaming device. It's been this way for a while now. Link to post Share on other sites
Playstation Tablet 1,884 Posted November 28, 2019 Share Posted November 28, 2019 (edited) Correct me if I'm wrong but all consoles since the PS2 have sold meh in Japan. The the PS2 launched 20 years ago, it's been a handheld market ever since PSP/DS days in 2006. Edited November 28, 2019 by Team 2019 Link to post Share on other sites

Devs like Falcom, Nippon Ichi etc are just going to keep making PS4 versions till the end of time, since PS5 is BC anyways. These guys kept on making freaking Vita games, I don't see how they will switch to Switch. All their games are also on PC now. Link to post Share on other sites

PS3 is over 10 million in Japan. but to address the OP... PS4 is a worldwide success and big games sell well enough in Japan... relatively speaking it's also a "success" in Japan.
