FIREPOWER 729
Ghostz is probably on suicide watch right now! Since MS said the deal is about King and cellphone games the CMA has called their bluff and is suggesting they remove COD or Activision altogether from the deal. They want the remedy to the deal to be a structural change instead of a signed agreement as that will be too tough to enforce realistically. MS has until the 22nd of this month to respond. They can either address the CMA's concerns or forfeit the deal. CMA isn't like the FTC where you get to fight in court. You either accept their terms or do an appeal that will still fall back on them for the final decision. Either way you're fucked if you decide to go against their findings. This explains the PR storm we witnessed yesterday with Bobby Kotick and Satya Nadella making the rounds on the news networks. They knew they were both fucked Let's see how much COD is important to MS. They can drop COD and the deal will go through or they can forfeit and say goodbye to the entire deal! TLHBFR!!!!!!!! After a five-month investigation, the UK regulator has provisionally found that the deal could reduce competition and “result in higher prices, fewer choices, or less innovation for UK gamers”. It also believes Call of Duty and other franchises will be important to the growth of cloud streaming, and that Microsoft could remove competition by making these games exclusive to its cloud offering. The CMA has suggested that a “partial divestiture of Activision Blizzard” would be a solution it would consider in order to approve the acquisition. This could mean either: Selling off the part of the business that deals with Call of Duty Selling off the Activision segment of Activision Blizzard Selling off both the Activision and the Blizzard segments The CMA’s other given possible ‘solution’ would be the prohibition of the merger altogether, it said. The regulator states that Microsoft has informed it of its commitments to keep Call of Duty on rival platforms such as PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, and says it would potentially consider this kind of remedy, but that it would prefer a structural solution such as removing Activision from the deal altogether as it requires less ongoing enforcement Edited February 8, 2023 by FIREPOWER
Twinblade★ 3,925
This would be pretty bad for MS. There's no point to the Acquisition if CoD isn't included.

You're pretty much catching Microsoft in their WHOLE BULLSHIT LIE that they are trying to convince us they are not doing. And make no mistake, the Call of Duty splinter company would be an absolutely successful company. Hell I bet Bobby Kotick would stay around and continue being the CEO of that. 1

jehurey 3,237
The other great thing about this is that Microsoft is paying $70B, and they are saying its primarily for their mobile businesses. So, if they are forced to remove Call of Duty, then according to what Microsoft has been telling us publicly..............this SHOULDN'T LOWER the $70 Billion dollar buyout, all that much. Maybe what? $60 billion, or $55 billion? But if Microsoft says "well, if we're not getting COD, then we won't be paying more than $35 billion" then those motherfuckers ARE CLEARLY MAKING IT KNOWN that Call of Duty was the centerpiece in the $70 billion dollar buyout. They are practically being forced to OVERPAY for King and mobile gaming.Oh man, this is really starting to get good.
sugarhigh 519
I honestly don't care if MS gets CoD. Activision is the worst publisher in the industry, way worse than EA. The big question for me is Blizzard. Would they be better under MS?

Absolutely have no reason to believe that would be improved under Microsoft.

Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, Call of Duty. Respect to them for Sekiro, but that's a rare exception.

sugarhigh 519
It would be better for everyone if Xbox quit the industry than MS buys up the biggest publishers. We're really not losing anything if Xbox throws in the towel.
Tears of the Cows 1,211
The deal is as good as approved. The entire argument is about the cloud. All MS has to do is say they’ll keep COD on competition’s cloud services, which is likely all they were going to get anyway.

With the FTC, MS can still challenge their decisions in court but with CMA they can't do shit. If MS doesn't agree to the terms of CMA's findings they are fucked and CMA will sink the deal. Either way Sony, Nvidia, and Google are probably popping bottles of champagne now Edited February 8, 2023 by FIREPOWER
