Digital-only on PC is decent as long as Valve remains trustworthy (no sign of concern after 20 years). And if Valve went evil there are a lot of alternatives.

 

Digital-only on console is fucked. You literally only have one source for games, who set all the prices. I would never want to go for this.

While I don't like clutter more than most people, I don't like paying the same price for a digital game as a physical one that a company can just take away if they want to.

They can do that with physical games too... a single bios update to your console and they can revoke any license of any games that were ever played in it.

With physical games you have the market to determine a sale price. A digital game will eventually be discounted at different times. With physical copies  you can probably always find them on sale anytime you want.

eh, i rather pay more to have the game pre-loaded, without having a case. but to each is own.

I'm not advocating for one over the other. I dont like the idea of not having the option. This isn't for the benefit of the consumer, it's for the industry.  Also a lot of gamers are kids and the second hand market is big for them. Being able to sell or even trade a game towrads another is a big deal for the teenager to college aged gamers. I get why Sony, Nintendo, and MS dont want this but fuck them all.

Japan still buy mostly physical, right? I remember the sales charts were for physical copies only back when I cared about these things. I imagine it's both now but the split is probably still majorly physical.

....yeah, after you got majorly fucked by Valve and something happened to the biggest gaming library you have ever collected.....is what you are saying.

 

Gabe Newell is an ex-Microsoft employee who got rich off of Windows 95. I wouldn't put to much stock on the "benevolent dictator" concept.

I don't put stock in that at all. Valve is just a company. But they're a company that has had many chances to be shitty and resisted. They have a 20 year track record for managing conflicting interests between players and publishers. There's no guarantee it will continue, but this special trustworthiness is obviously valuable to them.
