Digital Foundry; Sonic Team Racing Xbox1X/S and Switch Analysis.

Recommended Posts

DF: Switch version's performance more consistently and more stable than Xbox1S......we prefer to play on Switch than on Xbox1s.......... Impressive:dame:

note*full PS4/Pro analysis was done in a separate video.

p

Quick Summary;

Assets are the same in all versions

Xbox1X: Native 4K.... targets 60fps.... inconsistent frame rate..drops to 50s and 40s....DF notes developer should drop res to get stable performance.

Xbox1s : 900p... targets 60fps... fluctuates amd drops to the mid 30s....framerate all over the place... stutters.

Base XB1: No Analysis

Switch: 900p docked, Native 720p handheld.... solid 30fps.  Minor drops in certain sections in a few stages.  Consistent performance throughout.

Bonus.

PS4 pro:  1500p, solid 60fps (Best performing version of the game)

Base PS4: 1080p, 60fps

DF verdict; PS4/pro> Xbox1X > Switch >X1s

If you can't do it right don't do it at all.

Switch

  • 1600x900 docked
  • 1280x720 portable
  • No intro FMV due to cartridge size constraints
  • Lower levels of foliage, more agressive LoD draw in and less anisotropic filtering
  • 30 FPS target which it maintains most of the time
  • Occasional drops into the mid 20's in both docked and portable
  • Could benefit from optimization

Xbox One S

  • 1600x900
  • 60 FPS target which struggles to not only be hit but maintained
  • Fluctuating FPS most of the time
  • Typical range is 45-55 FPS with lows into the the high 30's
  • Could benefit from FreeSync, lower resolution and optimization

PlayStation 4

  • 1920x1080
  • 60 FPS target which it can hit but struggles to hold in somewhat common instances
  • Fluctuates from time to time
  • Typical range 50-60 FPS with lows into the low 40's
  • Could benefit from a lower resolution and optimization

PlayStation 4 Pro

  • 2688x1512
  • 60 FPS target which it can maintain a majority of the time with some dips
  • Typical range is 55-60 FPS with lows into the mid 40's
  • Could benefit from a lower resolution (1440p) and optimization

Xbox One X

  • 3840x2160
  • 60 FPS target which it maintains most of the time (slightly more exacerbated dips that the Pro also experiences)
  • Typical range is 52-60 FPS with lows into the mid 40's
  • Performance profile between the base PlayStation 4 and Pro
  • Could benefit from FreeSync, a lower resolution (1800p-1920p) and optimization

At the time of recording

  1. PlayStation 4 Pro/Xbox One X (Pro has slightly better performance but the X has a 104% higher resolution, the X also has FreeSync which would smooth out inconsistencies)
  2. PlayStation 4
  3. Xbox One S (even though it fluctuates it has higher performance than Switch which FreeSync could largely resolve)
  4. Switch

They think a few FPS difference while the other platform is pushing twice as many pixels is a win.

:lawl:

They claim a win regardless . Like when re2 performed better on X but was slightly cleaner looking ...that was a win for them .

It's clear the pain df threads have caused them . X wins 95 percent of the time .

It was "cleaner" (sharper) looking on the Pro because it had virtually no AA to speak of which not only makes the build less performatively demanding, it makes the reconstruction more apparent and it also exacerbated specular highlights and made anything even slightly reflective sparkle like a glitter bomb exploded in the scene.

Hit the "HD" button on the bottom right.

ace combat 7, re2, kingdom hearts 3, anthem, doa6, dmc5, sekiro, and sonic racing = 3? lmao

6 of those are arguable, highly, even worse that leaves definitively 2 out of 350+ shared games :tom:

you just proved aza's case - he said wins and ties this year. even by your (biased) count, 6 are arguable and 2 are definitive wins.

thats 8 of like 11 high profile multiplats released this year. 350 :lawl:

DynamiteCop trying to change Digital Foundry's conclusions. :rofls:

They straight up say in the vid that 1s is the worse version because of how bad the performance is... :leo:

No, you're not understanding. It's not arguable that they're in line with each other or that the Pro is besting the X, it's arguable that the total package is better served on X because of large concessions on the Pro needed to "outperform it"

There's gray area that you people like to discount and ignore such as resolution and graphical settings, post processing levels etc.

"Oh it runs at a 3% better framerate, win!!!"

-"But it's rendering at a 78% higher resolution on the X..."

"No it's a win!!!"

That's the logic...

Their conclusions are meaningless and you need to learn this kiddo, subjective interpretation and injected viewpoints have no bearing on analysis of data or where it lands.

What they would do, play or want to personally experience is neither here nor there and it never has been. You're pushing back against data with opinions.

That doesn't fly son.

It's not good enough. when you have 0 exclusives, and especially when your in-house fauXclusives can't ever compete in scores or graphics.

Ever single multiplat should be better on X by a significant margins if we were to hold them to their advertisements. They lied.

That or, devs simply don't give enough of a shit to try on it because of low popularity and sales. Either way TLHBR.

They didn't lie, they supplied hardware which will factually outrender and outperform anything and everything on the Pro in absolutely every situation when properly developed for and by large margins. In the microscopic subset of games where this is not happening exactly as it should it's because the developer either didn't bother to properly optimize their game for the hardware or they made strange development decisions.

Luckily that's not even a handful of titles.
